Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple – Overview

Sri Bhakta Anjaneyaswamy Temple is located in an area called Nanganallur, which is about 10 km from the centre of Chennai city. Most people call the temple Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple, as the name is derived from its presiding deity, Lord Hanuman. He is also known as Anjaneya, as his mother is the monkey woman Anjana.

The foundation stone of Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple was laid around the year 1989 by some devotees of Hanuman who formed a group called Sri Maruthi Bhakta Samajam. The temple was open for the public in the year 1995. The most attractive feature of the temple is the idol of Lord Hanuman, which is 32 feet tall. The idol was carved out of a single piece of granite stone.

History of this Temple

The Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple was established by a community of devotees of Lord Hanuman called Sri Maruthi Bhakta Samajam. He commissioned the colossal idol of the deity in 1989, and after the construction of the temple, both the temple and the idol were consecrated in 1995.

Since then, a large number of devotees of Anjaneya have been visiting the temple every year. Sri Raghavendra Swami and Sri Kanchi Paramacharya were two such persons who took keen interest in the construction of the temple.

The main attraction of the Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple is the colossal idol of Lord Hanuman, carved out of a single granite stone without any breakpoints or streamlines. The grand statue is 322 feet tall. It is black in colour and stands above the other temples in the temple complex. In height, it is second only to the Hanuman idol at Panchavati, near Puducherry.

Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple opens in the morning 5.00am to 12.00pm and in evening 4.30pm to 9.00pm.

How to reach this Temple

Keelakattalai and Nanganallur are the two main halts near the Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple. Both of these are about a five-minute walk from the main gate. More than a dozen buses take commuters to this area from different parts of Chennai such as T. Nagar, Perambur and the High Court. The railway station is only 20 minutes away. It is a sparsely populated area, so getting a cab would not be difficult either.
