Koteshwar Mahadev Temple – Timings and overview
Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River on the Chopra motorway, three kms from Rudraprayag, the district headquarters. Lord Shiva resides here in every particle and thousands of devotees come to visit in the month of Shravan. Maharudrabhishek performs all the worship of God. Even on Mahashivratri, childless couples perform special rituals and their wishes are fulfilled.
History of this Temple
Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is a famous temple of Hindus, which is an ancient temple located at a distance of three kms from Rudraprayag town. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple was built in the 14th century. After this the temple was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries.
A large number of devotees visit this temple from nearby districts along with the devotees going on four pilgrimage Yatra. According to beliefs, Lord Shiva meditated in the cave located in the Koteshwar temple while going to Kedarnath. The naturally made idols and Shivling present inside their cave have been established here since ancient times.
Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River. There is a ten-meter-long cave on the hill just below the temple, where there is a Swayambhu Shivling. It is believed that by offering water on this Shivling in the month of Sawan, the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled. Childless couple also get children.
Best time to visit this Temple
Summer and winter months are ideal times to visit this temple. But during Mahashivaratri, the temple receives a heavy influx of pilgrims who come here to revel in the holy-spirit.

The temple has a conical shaped Shiva Linga which is believed to be the hump of Shiva.

By Road- Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is located at a distance of 5 km from Rudraprayag. A steep climb of 1 km will take you to this temple. To reach here one can hire a taxi, take a shared jeep or bus from Rudraprayag.
By Train- Nearest Railway Station from this temple is Rishikesh Railway Station which is located at a distance of about 142 kms and Dehradun railway station which is located at a distance of 185kms from Koteshwar Mahadev Temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local taxi or bus.
By Air- Nearest Airport from this temple is Jolly Grant International Airport, Dehradun which is located at a distance of about 160 kms from Koteshwar Mahadev Temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local tax or bus.
