Keesaragutta Temple, Telangana – Overview

The Keesaragutta temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and worshiped as Sri Ramalingeswaraswamy here in Rangareddy district of Telangana. This Keesaragutta temple is also known as Sri Ramalingeswara Swami Temple. This temple is just 40 km away from Hyderabad city.

This temple is located in Keesaragutta Mandal which was built before the 4^th century. The main temple of Lord Shiva built on the tomb of Shri Prabhu in granite. A five-star gopuram is built at the entrance of this ancient temple.

The main idol of the Keesaragutta Temple is that of Lord Shiva in the form of the Shiva Linga avatar and is worshiped by the name of Sri Ramalingeswara Swami here.

History of this Temple

According to legends, Lord Rama killed Ravana, so Lord Rama installed Shiva Lingams at various places, Kesargutta being one of the them. He ordered Hanuman to bring the Shivling from Varanasi. Lord Hanuman was late in coming with the Shivling, and Lord Shiva himself appeared before Sri Rama. That’s why this Shivling is called Swayambhu.

After that, Hanuman returned from Varanasi with 101 Shiva lingams and was saddened for not installing the lingams he had bought. For this he threw them all over the area. Lord Rama said that the hill on which the Shiva Linga is installed would be named Kesarigiri, later the name changed to Kesar and the sacred Shiva Linga in Keesaragutta Temple is called Ramalingeswara Swami.

Keesaragutta Temple opens at 6:00am in the morning and close at 6:30pm in the evening.

Being a popular hill station and an upcoming resort, Ananthagiri Hills is a must visit. It is a mesmerizing sight to watch and you feel closer to nature here. These hills are a part of Ananthagiri hill range. These hills are just 15.8 km away from Rangareddy via Vikarabad-Tandur road.

Maheshwaram

It is a pilgrimage site that includes the ruins of a 400-year-old Shiva temple. Hence the name Maheshwaram. It also has a grand mosque, Qutub Shahi, which is an example of great craftsmanship. Maheshwaram exhibits a mixture of different cultures.

Shamirpet Lake

Shamirpet Lake View Shamirpet Lake is an artificial lake built during the Nizam’s reign. It attracts many birds, due to which it is known as a good bird-watching spot. There is also a Jawahar Deer Park near the lake which houses several species of deer, peacocks and a variety of birds. Rangareddy is primarily a rural area of Hyderabad city.

Osman Sagar Lake

Popularly known as Gandipet, Osman Sagar Lake with its parks, resorts, amusement parks is a great tourist destination, especially after the rainy season when the reservoir is full. Osman Sagar was built by damming the Musi River during the reign of Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad. A majestic guest house called Sagar Mahal overlooks the lake and is now a heritage building.

By Road- Keesaragutta Temple is located at a distance of 35 kms from Hyderabad. So you can easily get bus service to reach Sri Ramalingeswara Swami Temple from all places in Hyderabad.

By Train- Nearest railway station is Bolarum Railway Station Junction which is at a distance of 18 km away from the temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services.

By Air- The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport which is 42 km away from the temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services.
