Girija Devi Temple, Ramnagar- Overview

Garjia Devi Temple or ‘Girija Devi Temple’ is located in Sunderkhal village of Uttarakhand. This is one of the main temples of Mata Parvathi.  This famous temple of Uttarakhand is situated at a distance of about 15 kms from Ramnagar. The temple is built on top of a small hill, where the beautiful environment gives a feeling of peace and elegance.

The place of Girija Devi is unique in the famous temples of Goddess. Because of being the daughter of Giriraj Himalaya, she is called by this name. It is believed that the temples where the Goddess is present in the form of Vaishnavi are worshiped with offerings flower and where Shiva is present in the form of Shakti.

History of this Temple

Archaeologists say that the oldest settlement of Kurmanchal was near Dhikuli, where the present Ramnagar is situated. The name of this city situated on the banks of Kosi River was then ‘Vairat Pattan’ or ‘Vairat Nagar’.

Prior to the arrival of the Katyuri kings, the kings of the Kuru dynasty used to rule here, who lived under the umbrella of the ancient Indraprastha empire. Dhikuli, Girija region has its own history of about 3000 years.

Famous Katyuri dynasty, Chandra dynasty, Gorkha dynasty and British rulers have enjoyed the holy land here. The power place named Girija was in a neglected state before 1940. Before the year 1940, the condition of Girija Devi Temple was not as it is today, later this goddess was known as Upta Devi. The people of that time believed that the mound in which the present Girija temple is located, was flowing from the upper area somewhere in the flood of Kosi river.

Importance of Girija Devi Temple

Parvathi, the consort of Lord Shiva, also has a name ‘Girija’. Maa Girija Devi is present in the Girija Devi temple in a virtuous form, who becomes happy only with true devotion. Here mother is worshiped by offering coconut, red cloth, vermilion, incense, lamp etc. Devotees offer bells or parasols when their wishes are fulfilled. Newly married women come here and wish for long life of their marriage.

By Train- Nearest Railway Station to Girija Devi Temple is Ramnagar Railway Station which is located at a distance of about 15.3 kms. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local services.

By Air- Nearest Airport to this temple is Pantnagar Airport which is located at a distance of about 92.3 kms from this temple. From here also you can easily reach this temple by using local services.

By Road- As this temple is situated in Uttarakhand. The roads of this State is well connected with the different states of the country. The distance from Delhi to Ramnagar is 252 km. You can easily reach this temple by road.
