Gujarat and Himachal Exit polls: Time never remains the same. At one point of time, other parties had to forge an alliance to put up a fight against the grand old party, Congress. But the inertia of Congress’ top brass has brought the party to political peril. In Lok Sabha elections 2014 and 2019, Congress failed to win even 10% of the Lok Sabha seats. In both the General elections, it failed to get the reputable post of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, on its own merit. However, the upcoming times also don’t paint a rosy picture for the Congress party.
Gujarat Exit polls – Congress sinks even further
It will be an understatement to say that Congress has under performed as a national party, at least for a decade now. Post Independence, through the Nehru-Gandhi family, Congress has directly ruled for more than 55 years out of 75 years. For five to six decades, Congress was considered as the default option for governance. But now, the party seems to be more interested in catapulting its Yuvraj than actually realising the true meaning of political party and its duty for the nation.
Evidently, the forecast of upcoming assembly elections also paints an ominous picture for Congress. As per the Gujarat and Himachal ‘polls of Exit Polls’, Congress is bound to suffer a major erosion, both in terms of seats as well as vote share, in Gujarat. It is expected to end up getting around 38 seats with its allies. If that happens, it will mean a sharp decline of around 50% in Congress’ seats as compared to last time. Unlike this election, In the 2017 state assembly elections, Congress gave a tough fight and won 77 seats. But it seems that the idea of ‘moral victory’ has percolated deep within the Congress and it has given up to even try to put up a fight.

Even in the state where Congress was gloating that it will form its government and dethrone BJP, it seems that the party will fall short of the majority mark. 6 out of 9 exit polls are predicting that the saffron party, BJP, will come back to power in the Himachal pradesh. In an assembly strength of 68 seats, Congress is expected to get around 30 seats, as per the aggregate of all Exit Polls.
Congress’ not worthy of being a National Party
With every subsequent election, Congress is losing its ground to political juggernaut BJP and the other regional players. If the result of these state assembly elections come on lines of Gujarat and Himachal exit polls, Congress should start counting its last days in Gujarat as well. Apart from the expected 50% drop in seat share, Congress has lost a large chunk of its vote bank to a new emerging party within the state, AAP.
As per many Gujarat and Himachal Exit Polls, AAP has narrowed the gap and is well poised to take advantage of Congress’ habit of taking hibernation post elections. Just like in other states, it is a foregone conclusion that the next assembly elections become a bipolar contest between BJP and AAP, lest Congress does some magic and shun its habit of self-destruction and vacating states after states for AAP.

With just two states in its kitty, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the infighting can end its government any day, Congress has lost its authority to claim itself as a national party. It has been wiped out from North-East, from Southern India and from the most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, that has a significant bearing on national politics. Rather than resurrecting itself, Congress’ leaders have been running pillar to post parroting that its Bharat Jodo Yatra has not been planned keeping electoral successes in mind. To them, voters of Gujarat and Himachal have given a resounding answer, that they should.
