Chinese PLA-Indian Army clash at Tawang: The desperation you know the frustration you don’t

Tawang clash

Tawang clash: Borders are the most protected of human inventions. These artificial lines require heavy deployment because organisations like the Chinese PLA do not miss a chance to humiliate their neighbours. It is almost as if the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is desperate for more land. But that is too simple to suggest. They are shrewder than them.

Clash: Chinese incursion in Tawang

On 9th of December, more than 300 Chinese soldiers suddenly decided to launch an offensive in Tawang clash. Unsurprisingly, they had come up with a plan to change the status quo. To their utter surprise, Indian soldiers were ready for it. in they pushed them back and beat them black and blue.

No bullets were fired and no serious injuries have been reported on the Indian side. While Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh abridged the nation about it, China decided to play it cool, an indication of their plan going haywire.

The sudden push is a surprise for many. Even the keenest observers of Chinese affairs are shocked by the PLA’s madness. But the method to the madness is being provided by the Polit Bureau of the CCP. It has many reasons to be frustrated with India. Additionally, it is also trying to score some long-term brownie points.

CCP irked by the Frontier Highway

The immediate cause of the CCP’s madness is India’s approval of the Frontier Highway in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a 2000-km-long highway, connecting border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang is also one of them. After it is fully constructed, Indian Armed Forces will find it a child’s play to transport their equipment from other states to the Chinese border along Arunachal.

By sending 300 troops in one go, the Chinese want to signal that, on their whims, they will attack India with maximum capacity. It is kind of their new way of warning India that we should stop the wave of development in Arunachal and other northeastern states.

G20 Presidency, Kashmir, and Ladakh

If the Chinese plan is successful at the minute level, then they will be able to communicate to the world that India was not worthy of the G20 presidency. China is witnessing India’s rising clout and wants to keep India in check. After Galwan, it has lost every battle on the diplomatic stage.

China sees that even the Indian opposition is urging Prime Minister Modi to use India’s G20 presidency to deter the Chinese. Given the decline in perception of its hollow threats in the last few years, especially the Pelosi-Taiwan crisis, China wants to remind the world of its one-upmanship.

It can only do so by threatening India, as India is its ultimate competitor. It is so scared of India’s rising clout that the Chinese are even ready to abandon the G20 meeting next year. . In July this year, China indicated that it may skip the Kashmir Part of G20 meetings. India did not buzz and announced another meeting in Ladakh.

This was an emphatic announcement of India’s claim over what both China and Pakistan like to call “disputed territories.” Both countries have been looking to take revenge on India. Pakistan went for its tried and tested way of pushing terrorists into the valley, but failed. By the end of October, India had killed 40 foreign terrorists. Seems like it has asked its Chinese masters to compromise with India’s land.

Jinping is trying to leverage India

Last but not least, Jinping is trying to use foreign policy as a tool to gain domestic popularity. In the last few weeks, his administration’s popularity has hit rock bottom. Waves of protests against the lockdowns have engulfed China. Jinping’s authoritarian response was not so successful either, as people found innovative ways to air their voices.

When domestic policies fail, jingoism and national security are the only options. They have yielded results in many places. Even in the American mid-terms, Pelosi’s drama in the Taiwan Strait helped Democrats save face. Jinping is no different. He is also trying repeat the same.

China wants to warn the world that it is the bigger contender for the second pole in the new world order. It will keep crossing borders in the upcoming future. What India needs to do is stay on high alert, just like we did a few days ago.
