Kiren Rijiju takes Nehru out of the history books, bashes him up and then puts him right back

Kiren Rijiju nehru

Kiren Rijiju latest remarks on Nehru: The generation reading this and many before this grew up listening to, ‘dedi hume azadi bina khadk bina dhal’. We are a witness to how the MK Gandhi- JL Nehru duo was credited for India’s independence and the entire freedom struggle. The freedom fighters, who gave unparalleled contributions in the movement, the ones who invoked a coup within the British Indian Army, the ones who were jailed in Kala Pani, were cornered to felicitate the Gandhi-Nehru duo.

With the advent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India gradually shed the lens through which history was painted to suit the narrative of a few. The debate has reached the public, and nothing better could have ever happened to the civilisational state.

Nehru- To be blamed for many things

It is a recent phenomenon that India has started looking at the grey areas of the tenures of leaders, rather than just black and white. While, till date, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was hailed for being a progressive leader, the narrative has suffered a dent. Nehru’s failures are now gaining recognition. Be it the defeat India suffered in 1962 at the hands of China due to diplomatic and strategic follies of Nehru or taking up the Kashmir issue to the UN.

Recently, PM Modi in his Gujarat’s Anand district rally on October 10, launched a scathing attack on JL Nehru without naming him. PM Modi accused JL Nehru of being the person who could not solve the Kashmir issue, while hailing the efforts of Sardar Patel for the same.

Congress rushes to Nehru’s rescue

PM Modi’s statement led to a war of words between the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party. Jairam Ramesh came hurriedly to defend the master and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of whitewashing the ‘real history’.

Jairam Ramesh went on to write a Twitter thread where he said that PM Modi had ‘overlooked the facts in order to castigate Nehru on the matter of Jammu and Kashmir.’ Ramesh said it was Maharaja Hari Singh who dithered on accession of the state as he dreamt of independence. He claims that only after Pakistan invaded, Maharaja Hari Singh acceded to India.

Then Ramesh claims that Sardar Patel, the man who made India how we see it today, was “okay with Jammu and Kashmir joining Pakistan till September 13 1947 when the Nawab of Junagadh acceded to Pakistan.”

Ramesh showed in his tweet that old habits die hard, as he credited Sheikh Abdullah of championing the accession due to his “friendship with and admiration for Nehru, and his respect for Gandhi.”

Rijiju’s instant rebuttal with facts

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju was the first to slam Jairam Ramesh on his historical lies on the matter of Kashmir. Rijiju’s rebuttal arguments stronger, as he quoted Nehru himself. Replying to Jairam Ramesh and the accusations levelled against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rijiju responded on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Rijiju actually attacked how Congress had manipulated history over time. We all have heard in schools that while all the princely states acceded to India, 3 states -Kashmir, Hyderabad and Junagadh wanted to remain independent.

However, as minister Kiren Rijiju mentions, this is a historical lie, that ‘Maharaja Hari Singh dithered on the question of accession of Kashmir to India and has gone on for far too long in order to protect the dubious role of JL Nehru.’

Kiren Rijiju quoted what Nehru spoke in Lok Sabha on 24th July, 1952 (after agreement with Sheikh Abdullah). It establishes that the first time that Maharaja Hari Singh himself approached Nehru for accession to India was July 1947, even before independence, and it was Nehru who rebuffed the Maharaja.

Kiren Rijiju furthered established that Nehru not only denied the accession request in 1947 but was also dithering in October 1947.

Kiren Rijiju summed up that Nehru dithered on the accession and it was Nehru who conjured up some ‘special’ case for Kashmir and wanted much more than mere accession, which was driven by vote bank politics and India is still paying the price for Nehru’s follies.

Then Kiren Rijiju pronounced the state of new India, which will “no more accept those sinful ‘lies’ which were orchestrated just to protect One Person and One Family.”
