Recently, media reports stated that after successive failures of 15 rounds of disengagement talks, China now has agreed to withdraw its troops from the area of Gogra-Hotsprings (PP-15) in a coordinated and planned way. In compliance with the 16th round of talks on September 8th, 2022, India and China carried out verification to confirm the withdrawal of troops from Eastern Ladakh. China’s agreement to disengage from the contested area was viewed as a positive step in the light of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the Uzbekistan city of Samarkand.
As SCO summit is mainly promoted by China, India’s unfavourable response against the Dragon would have cost them a lot. That’s why they thought to cool off the situation by agreeing to withdraw hours before the commencement of the summit. But, PM Modi’s hard line on China and its medieval imperialist behaviour was still visible at SCO.
Modi Ignored Jinping at the SCO
Since the deadly conflict in eastern Ladakh, the Prime Minister has not met Chinese President Xi Jinping even once. Taking a strong and offensive position along the Line of Actual Control (LCA), India has not given a single chance to the Chinese that they continue with border aggression and maintain normal relations in other businesses.
Working on the philosophy that the state of the border will decide the state of the relationship, India has taken an iron hand against the Chinese. This was also very much visible in the recent SCO summit in Samarkand.
On the occasion of the recently concluded SCO summit in Samarkand, PM Modi held numerous bilateral talks with member countries other than the group meetings, but he refused to even shake hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
PM Modi not only missed the common dinner on the day but during a photo-op, PM Modi, despite standing side by side with the Chinese President, did not even smile or shake hands.

Bilateral Talks with Other Leaders
During the summit, the Prime Minister met various leaders of the country and held bilateral talks with leaders like Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, Vladimir Putin of Russia and even Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. Considering the geopolitical situations, PM Modi held talks to increase comprehensive cooperation to strengthen business and economic ties among member countries. But he refused to meet with Xi Jinping.
During a briefing for the media, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra explaining the bilateral meetings said that all the meetings were held on time. When asked about China, he said, “I don’t think there is anything more to read into that.”
Although congratulating New Delhi for hosting the summit next year, Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “we will support India for its presidency next year.” As India will assume the rotation annual president of the SCO in 2023, other than a congratulatory call, there were no other communications between the two leaders.

Maintaining a safe distance from Xi Jinping, PM Modi has clarified the stance that Bharat will never compromise on its territorial integrity. It is pertinent to note that about 2.5 years ago in May 2020, China had tried to transgress along the Indian territories in eastern Ladakh. Countering the Communist soldiers, the Indian army killed more than 60 PLA soldiers and suffered 20 casualties.
Since then, India has maintained a tough stance against China. In every political, economic, and security domain, India has strived to take a head on fight with imperialist Chinese. Not giving the Chinese a single chance to normalise the relations, India has told them to maintain peace and tranquillity in border areas otherwise, overall relations would be affected. PM Modi’s decision to not meet with XI Jinping even after withdrawal from PP-15 shows his strong position.
