Amid the growing tensions between nations, India has emerged as a mediator in many circumstances. From calling Zelenskyy to controlling the dragon, India has emerged as an important virtue in world politics. On one hand, India is continuously maintaining friendly relations with Russia. And on the other side, it is balancing the US as well. It was very well witnessed at the SCO summit where PM Modi passed on a diplomatic dialogue to Putin. However, in the wake of balancing the said superpowers of the world, India also kept Pakistan and China under check, although from a safe distance.
PM Modi at the SCO summit
Recently, a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was held in Uzbekistan’s city of Samarkand, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other world leaders stressed the regional security situation and ways to enhance trade and connectivity at the annual summit of the grouping.
During the SCO meeting, PM Modi opined that COVID-19 and the Ukraine situation have resulted in hurdles in the global supply chain, resulting in a food and energy security crisis. He said, “World is facing the challenge of economic recovery.” Thus, better connectivity and transit rights are the key to creating a better supply chain.
On one hand, it was the first time that the Indian Prime Minister and the Chinese President have met face to face at the summit, since the border clash between India and China at the Galvan Valley. On the other hand, PM Modi met the Russian President, and both the friendly nations exchanged a diplomatic dialogue.

India and Russia at the SCO
As a matter of importance, the world eyes were on India and Russia meet. Focusing on the continuation of Russia- Ukraine war, PM Modi stressed that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue have kept the world together. While talking to the Russian President, he said, “I know that today’s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this.” While responding, Putin said that he understands Delhi’s concerns about conflict in Ukraine and want it to end “as soon as possible.”
Further after the meeting, PM Modi called it a wonderful meeting with President Putin with concentrating the furthering of “India-Russia cooperation in sectors such as trade, energy, defence and more.” The meeting also included discussions over other bilateral and global issues.
Amidst conflicts in many parts of the world, India and Russia ties are emerging as a pillar of worldwide development. And this can be seen in their continuous initiation of various projects. As reported by TFI earlier, India and Russia are together working on the International North-South Corridor, which is a multi-mode network of ship, rail, and road routes for transporting goods between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe. Its objective is to strengthen trade connectivity between major cities such as Mumbai, Moscow, Tehran, Baku, Bandar Abbas, Astrakhan, Bandar Anzali and many others.
India and US ties to counter China
Apart from this, it is also important to note that India is not only maintaining diplomatic ties with one axis but with the other as well. For this purpose, India and the US have signed multiple defense pacts, which is making China anxious.
In August this year, both countries participated in Exercise Vajra Prahar, the 13th Edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise. It was a special forces exercise conducted at a higher-than-normal altitude of Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh.
As part of their next exercise named Yudh Abhyas, both India and the US have buckled their belts. The 2022 edition of Yudh Abhyas will be conducted in the Auli area of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand. It is prominent to note that the place where this exercise will be held from October 18 to 31 is very close to the Chinese border.
America’s explicit support to India in its anti-China drive is what making the dragon anxious. To glance at it more closely, it is evident that the Indian lion will no longer kneel down against the dragon, rather it will retaliate with increased force. Its recent instance could be witnessed with India’s withdrawal from IPEC and RCEP. To put it in simple words, the world will witness India’s true power in case of an attempt of its security breach.

India’s continuous check over China and Pakistan
Talking about the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), it was noted that the Indian Prime Minister Modi and the Chinese President didn’t exchange any words at the publicly broadcast session. However, while speaking, President Xi Jinping congratulated India for taking over the chair of the grouping and promised “China’s support” to India in hosting the event next year.
The conflicting relationship of India with China and Pakistan was seen in the difference between their counterparts, standing for a group photograph at the SCO summit. Evidently, India is rigid over its decision of maintaining its territorial integrity. Just like the withdrawal from IPEF, which has now left no meaning to its existence without the world’s largest democracy. To sum it up, the world will witness heavy repercussions in case of hindering India’s integrity.
Concentrating on India’s two neighboring infiltrators, it is noticeable that China has mutual partnership with Russia while Pakistan has the support of the US. Therefore, to balance out the two axes, India is balancing US and Russia for itself while keeping its neighboring adversaries under check.
