- Born on 8 September 1926, as a child, Bhupen Hazarika was inspired by songs, folk tales, the rhythm and beauty of life along the Brahmaputra River, which is reflected in his songs.
- At the age of ten, he recorded his first song, when his musical talent was noticed by renowned Assamese lyricist Jyotiprasad Agarwala and filmmaker Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
- By the age of 12, Bhupen Hazarika had already written and recorded two songs.
- His songs followed the trend of conveying stories through music, touching on every aspect of human life, including happiness, grief, courage, romance, and loneliness.
- He went on to brush up his intellect by earning a Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1952 and a PhD in Mass Communication from Colombia University.

A wandering minstrel, who considered music as an instrument of social reform, Hazarika carried the message of global unity and one-ness.
Bhupen popularised Assamese culture on a national and international scale over the course of his 60-year career that earned him a National Award for best music direction in 1975, a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, a Padma Shri in 1977, a Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992, and a Padma Bhushan in 2001, among other honours.
- Bhupen Hazarika was posthumously given the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2012, and the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, in 2019.
- His popularity in the North-East area, particularly Assam, is immeasurable.
- He died on November 5, 2011, at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai, of multiple organ failure. More than half a million people turned out for his funeral.
- Two years after his death, his partner Kalpana Lajmi announced his biopic. However, this project never took off.
