A wandering minstrel, who considered music as an instrument of social reform, Hazarika carried the message of global unity and one-ness.

Bhupen popularised Assamese culture on a national and international scale over the course of his 60-year career that earned him a National Award for best music direction in 1975, a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, a Padma Shri in 1977, a Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992, and a Padma Bhushan in 2001, among other honours.
