Sukhbir Singh Badal represented Faridkot in the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha. From 1998 to 1999, he served as Union Minister of State for Industry in the Second Vajpayee Ministry. He also served in the Rajya Sabha from 2001 to 2004.
He was re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Faridkot in 2004. In January 2008, he was elected President of Akali Dal.
He was sworn in as Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister a year later, in January 2009. At the time, he was not a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
He resigned in July 2009, at the end of the six months available for contesting assembly elections, during which he did not run. He was reappointed as Deputy Chief Minister.

On November 21, 1991, he married Harsimrat Kaur Badal. She is also a politician and has been a member of the Indian Parliament from the Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency since 2009.
She served as the Union Food Processing Minister under Prime Minister Narendra Modi until May 17, 2020. Surinder Kaur, his mother, died on May 24, 2011, at PGIMER in Chandigarh from the throat and pancreatic cancer.
