Present political scenario in Maharashtra
The NCP was reduced to 41 seats in the 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, their largest defeat to date, and found itself on the Opposition benches almost a decade later.
Jayant Patil retained his seat and quickly rose to become the NCP’s leading speaker in the Assembly, regularly opening debates and taking a tough stance against the government. In 2018, he was unanimously elected as the NCP’s State President, succeeding Sunil Tatkare.
Jayant Patil faced a difficult task in reorganizing and delivering a better outcome in the 2019 Assembly Elections. The NCP-INC alliance was not expected to perform well in the elections, and the entire burden of campaigning and outreach fell solely on the NCP. Jayant Patil launched and led the Shiv Swarajya Yatra in August 2019.
