Bollywood and the nepotistic brats riding their high horses are in for a Darwinian extinction. And then, comes South-Indian cinema inching towards a pan-India appeal with each passing day. The back to back blockbuster success of South-India films have helped regional actors gather fame from the entire nation and beyond. Vijay Devarakonda is one such name who has broken the barriers of language and made it so big that he has made his Bollywood debut. Has his popularity gotten into his head, or is the media all geared up to send him back to pavilion.
Vijay Devarakonda: An actor who made his own way
Vijay Devarakonda, who turned into nation’s hearthtrob with Arjun Reddy, made foray into the entertainment industry with Nuvvila as a supporting actor in 2011. But he only gained recognition with his energetic role in Sekhar Kammula’s ‘Life is Beautiful’. In the span of 10 years, Devarakonda has won a million hearts and is today the most sought after actors of Tollywood.
The Tollywood actor, after gaining recognition in the Hindi belt with his films like Dear Comrade and Arjun Reddy, has now debuted in Bollywood with ‘Liger’. However, since the promotions, the Vijay Devarakonda-Ananya Pandey starrer Liger has been surrounded with controversies. And the netizens are up in arms against Devarakonda’s Liger following some of his statements.
#BoycottLiger is trending on Twitter
#BoycottLiger is trending on social media sites. The two reasons behind the call for boycott are, the film is produced by Nepotism king Karan Johar’s production house Dharma Productions. Secondly, in the film Devarakonda is paired with ‘struggle queen’ Ananya Pandey, who also owns the blessing of Karan Johar. These two factors could still have been overcomed with the content. Not to forget, Shershaah produced by Karan Johar was a superhit.
The two add ons were not enough that Vijay Devarakonda, who otherwise is a nation heartthrob made some controversial remarks, that were reported as Vijay’s arrogance and he is being painted red with all other nepotistic kids.
Devarakonda’s controversial remarks that drew ire
The first headline that gathered attention was of Vijay Devarakonda speaking in support of Aamir Khan. As the film Lal Singh Chaddha was facing massive backlash for Aamir Khan’s 2015 intolerance comments, it was publicised that Devarakonda has come out to support sinking LSC.
Talking about the film, Devarkonda has said the most obvious. He said that boycott campaign is not only affecting the star cast, but is also affecting the livelihood of thousands of families who worked in the film. Vijay stated that he sees films as a job for many people as it generates opportunity and livelihood.
The other statement that drew ire was Vijay saying, “TV pe dekhoge.” responding to the boycott trend, Vijay said, “I think we are giving too much attention. Toh karne do (boycott), kya krenge hum. Hum toh picture banaayenge, jinko picture dekhna hai vo dekhnge. Jinko nahi dekhna vo tv pe yaa phone pe dekhnge.” While reading this, one should remember he was speaking in Hindi, Hindi is not his first language. And that has also done a lot of damage.
Is Devarakonda a threat to the Hindi film ‘stars’?
In the every above mentioned incident, Vijay Devarakonda was asked leading questions, questions that were worded to suggest a particular answer. If someone asks, ‘Did you break the glass?’ If the glass is broken there, the answer to the question is more likely to be a ‘Yes’.
This is exactly what the TRP hungry media did. They had put forward leading questions before Devarakonda that led towards a particular response. The way in which the questions were framed limited the range of acceptable answers. This is where Devarakonda was trapped by the TRP hungry media. But why was it done by the Bollywood loving media, who rather stays upset on the Boycott/Cancel trend. Is it because the cabal is afraid of a south-Indian star making big in the Hindi belt at a time when movies of mega stars are falling flat on their face?
