The West is in its colonial slumber. It still feels that the entire developing world should toe their line and stand behind them. Any nation proclaiming its sovereignty does not go down well with the supposed superpowers. High on its colonial slumber West tried to arm-twist India, but the same arm gave the West a bloody nose.
India was a colony for centuries, although it gained independence (not due to andolans based on ahimsa) back in 1947 itself, the power just shifted from the British to pseudo-Goras (Babus). The supposed superpowers kept dictating India their terms, and India obediently toed the line. It took us around 70 years to blow the shackles of colonialism. Only after the advent of External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, India refused to toe West’s line or succumb under its pressure. The way India has responded to the question regarding Russian oil repeatedly, stands in deposition for the same.
Jaishankar in Bangkok
Indian Foreign Minister Dr Subhramanyam Jaishankar is in Thailand to attend the 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting. The meeting is held to commemorate the 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Jaishankar is in Bangkok where he will hold a meeting with his Thai counterpart, where two MoUs in the Health and Broadcasting sectors will be signed.
The meeting is important as India and Thailand are close maritime neighbours having historical and cultural linkages. To add on, in contemporary times, India’s ‘Act East’ Policy is complimented by Thailand’s ‘Look West’ Policy.
Jaishankar opens up on Russian Oil imports
Dr. Jaishankar is on a Thailand visit and he began the trip by meeting the Indian community in Bangkok. A video of Dr S Jaishankar is doing rounds on the internet from the meeting, that has once again proved that Jaishankar is a darling of the masses.
Jaishankar while meeting the Indians in Bangkok shared India’s opinion on the purchase of Russian oil. There has been widespread criticism of India over purchase of Russian oil amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis. While there have been various attempts to spin the narrative and paint India guilty of funding the war, Dr Jaishankar has chided the West and has put up the facts for the West to recheck and verify.

Jaishankar shows its place to the West
Jaishankar has once again put up a strong statement regarding India’s purchase of Russian oil. Jaishankar mentioned that every nation and its leaders will try to ensure the best deal possible for the people of the nation. India is doing the same to cushion high energy prices. Although, India is not doing it in a defensive way.
Jaishankar stated that it his “obligation” and “moral duty” to ensure the best deal for the country. He said, “We are being very open and honest about our interests. I have a country that has a per capita income of two thousand dollars. These are not people who can afford higher energy prices.”
Began my visit to Thailand by meeting the Indian community.
Shared with them the achievements and aspirations of New india. Welcomed their enthusiasm to contribute to India’s progress.

While addressing the Indian diaspora he stated that oil prices are “unreasonably high” and so are the gas prices. A lot of traditional suppliers to Asia are diverting to Europe because Europe is buying less oil from Russia.

India’s ‘Digitus Medius’ to the West
When asked about the impact of buying Russian oil on India’s relationship with the US, Jaishankar said “not just in the United States but including the US- that they know what our position is and they move on with that…”
Jaishankar also added, “they may not appreciate it” but as we have laid our interests in a very direct manner, “my sense is that the world somewhat accepts that as reality.”(sic)
This is not the first time that Jaishankar has laid forward India’s interests and Jaishankar has been thrashing the West left, right and center. Jaishankar had hinted that if the US does not stop interfering in India’s domestic situation, then India will feel compelled to interfere in America’s domestic matters as well.
All that US and its allies should do is, they should come out of their colonial slumber and accept that India is now a strong pole in this multipolar world.
