Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is popular among the masses for his strict approach towards hooligans, infiltrators, illegal immigrants, and illegal construction sites. His firm approach and strict policies are only next to CM Yogi Adityanath. His Assam model is also being hailed by various politicians and leaders. Since he is a no-nonsense kind of politician and sets his aim to annihilate the funding sources of the Jihadi network, he, obviously, is not going to tolerate any terror activity taking place in his state. This is what he exactly did and began taking strict action against the madrasas in Assam.
Assam – Demolition of illegal madrasas begins
A madrasa in Assam’s Barpeta district was demolished by the district administration on Monday, as per the senior officials. The madrasa has been evicted over the allegations of its involvement in anti-national activities. “Since this madrasa was constructed on government land, it was demolished in an eviction drive conducted by the Barpeta district administration today. Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order,” Barpeta Superintendent of Police Amitava Sinha said.
The involvement of the faculty of the madrasa, ‘Shaikhul Hind Madmudal Hasan Jamiul Huda Islamic Academy’, at Dhakaliapara in Barpeta with the anti-national elements came to the fore after Md Suman’s arrest in March, Sinha said.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, too, reacted to the issue saying that an “investigation is done into the institutional and appropriate action is taken whenever a complaint of fundamentalism comes.”
He added, “This is the second Madrasa we evicted as they were not running as an institution but were running as a terrorist hub. I don’t want to generalize, but we investigate & take appropriate action when a complaint of fundamentalism comes.”
However, this is not the first madrasa in Assam whose connection with terror outfits was discovered. Earlier this month, a madrasa in Morigaon was also demolished because of its alleged links with Bangladesh-based terror group, Ansarullah Bangla Team.

Islamic radicalisation
Assam shares its border with Bangladesh which makes it vulnerable to the problems of illegal migrants and religious radicalism. These illegal migrants first assimilate into the locals and create law and order issues. Later, they try to change the demographic composition of the state and cause communal tensions.
Thus, the Assam government is left with no option but to adopt strict measures. This is the reason it had passed a law to shut down all the government-run Madrasas in the Assam. These Madrasas were converted into general schools. This was done to provide modern education to poor kids instead of keeping them in a vicious cycle.
Madrasas in many cases have been used for religious indoctrination. Religious ‘preachers’ have been fuelling radicalism, and hatred for other communities. The Home Ministry had banned his foundation, Islamic Research Foundation under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking about the radicalisation, said that “It has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that Assam is becoming a hotbed for Islamic fundamentalists. When you bust five modules and the whereabouts of the other five Bangladeshi nationals are still not known, then you can imagine the gravity,” he said.
The chief minister is working towards establishing lasting peace in Assam, and it was a result of his efforts that ULFA decided not to boycott the Republic Day celebrations this year. His work speaks for himself. He is also ensuring the holistic development of Assam and making sure there’s no hurdle in the way of development of the Northeast.
