Breakthrough
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, a romantic comedy, served as Khaitan’s directorial debut. His original idea for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was to turn it into a Bunty Aur Babli-style tale of two con artists, but the script eventually evolved into one about a flirty Punjabi guy who has an illicit relationship with an engaged Punjabi woman.
After completing the first draught of his script, which was then given the working title Humpty Sharma Di Love Story, Khaitan brought it to Dharma Productions, who gave their approval for it to be produced with a first-time writer-director at the helm.
For his storyline, Khaitan credited Casablanca and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), and the movie itself pays reference to both of those films as well as DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie, which received favourable reviews after its July 11, 2014 release, made more than 1.11 billion INR (about $14 million) globally.

The New York Times’ Rachel Saltz noted the movie’s message of gender equality. The movie was a financial hit, grossing over 2 billion yen ($25 million) at the box office. He was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Director as a result of it.

Shashank Khaitan was raised in a Marwari business family in Nashik, Maharashtra, after being born in Kolkata. Khaitan first showed a greater interest in sports, participating in competitions in tennis and cricket. He made the decision to pursue an entertainment career when he was 17 years old. He first worked as a dancing teacher.
He quickly relocated to Mumbai. To enter the film industry, Khaitan enrolled in Whistling Woods International Institute, a school for filmmakers founded and backed by seasoned director Subhash Ghai. He attributes his technological background to the institute.
Together with some of his classmates at Whistling Woods, Khaitan attempted to make his debut film, Sherwani Kahaan Hai, but it was never properly finished.
Relationship
Shashank Khaitan married Nalini Datta, a classmate of his, whom he had loved since he was a young child. Nalini came on the stage while Shashank was telling his love story, and upon seeing her, Shashank was completely taken aback.
“Shashank is quite romantic in real life, too, and always trying to impress me,” Nalini admitted. “However, Shashank is incredibly forgetful and lethargic, which frustrates me a lot” she said.

Shashank Khaitan worked as an assistant on the sets of Ghai’s movies Black & White and Yuvvraaj in 2008 in addition to playing Manohar in the 22-minute drama Roorkee By-Pass, directed by Arundhati Sen Verma.
He made a fleeting cameo in Disney’s ABCD 2, the follow-up to the dance drama ABCD: Any Body Can Dance.
With Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Khaitan made his feature film debut. He then went on to helm the film’s spiritual successor, Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017).
He was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Director for his efforts on the latter.
He also contributed to the anthology film Ajeeb Daastaans and the love drama Dhadak (2018).
He started working as a producer for Dharma Productions in 2019, with the release of Good Newwz.
