End of JD(U)-BJP alliance has a positive note for the saffron party

BJP JD(U)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an eternal optimist. During the Corona pandemic he gave a clarion call to find opportunities even in the times of crisis (Aapda me avsar). It seems that the same opportunity is ahead of the saffron party, BJP, in Bihar. The political divorce from Palturam Mr Nitish Kumar may be a blessing in disguise for BJP, if it can do aggressive politicking and go solo in the state politics.

Did BJP fall for it again?

The recent betrayal of people’s mandate was always on the cards. In 2013, BJP had suffered betrayal from its unhappy alliance partner Nitish Kumar. In addition to that, in 2017, Mr Kumar, infamous as Palturam, had broken the Mahagathbandhan with RJD. So, it was an open secret that Nitish Kumar is a power hungry politician whose ambitions have always triumphed over ideology, ethics of politics and principles. Therefore, it was foolhardy of the BJP to trust him.

The political revival of a declining Nitish Kumar and JD(U) might be the gravest political blunders BJP has ever committed. It served Nitish Kumar the state’s responsibility on the golden platter. Had the BJP not lent its full support, the JD(U) might have been wiped out from the state courtesy of massive anti-incumbency against Nitish Kumar. This clearly means that the BJP at the time of state elections fell for the lies and crocodile tears of Nitish Kumar.

However, it is now done and dusted, so BJP should stop crying over spilt milk and see the great opportunity that lies ahead of it from this short-sighted action of Mr Nitish Kumar.

Every black cloud has a silver lining

If capitalised properly then this political betrayal may work in favour of the BJP in the long term. It has opened the door for the BJP to go all out against the misgovernance of both Nitish and Lallu Raj. The BJP has strong arsenal in its kit in the form of ‘betrayal of mandate’, nepotism, incompetence and corruption of Yadav clan. It also distances BJP from the anti-incumbency and fatigue of the Nitish government ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Further, the BJP can aggressively expand in the state. It was playing second fiddle to JD(U) courtesy to the bonhomie between then Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi and CM Nitish Kumar. Whenever the saffron party tried to expand, Nitish played a spoilsport and blackmailed the party through public spat and displeasure.

Out of 243 assembly seats, BJP contested on 102 seats and 110 seats in 2010 and 2020 respectively. On the contrary, JDU contested 141 and 115 seats in those elections. The popularity of BJP vis-a-vis JD(U) is evident from the fact that BJP maintained a far more impressive winning strike rate as compared to declining party JD(U). BJP has been a strong pillar in Bihar politics, it only needs to go solo and have faith in its development model and ideologies.

Apart from that, Nitish was a liability and prevented BJP from raising key ideological issues in the state. Now it can aggressively campaign on issues of Nationalism and Hindutva.

BJP has a strong cadre and ideological fort. It only needs a politician who has strategic vent of mind like Devendra Fadnavis and mass leader like Yogi Adityanath or Himanta Biswa Sarma. It has to empower leaders like Giriraj Singh who are unapologetic on core issues of the party and have strong command on ground.

So, it is time for the BJP to work on the 50% plus formula and go solo in the state assembly. If the party doesn’t go soft on Nitish Kumar and plays a role of sensible opposition, like it did in Maharashtra under Devendra Fadnavis, it can topple the castle of greedy politicians plundering the resources of the state for their personal ambitions.
