Cyber attack is one of the biggest threats to any country in today’s world. “Cyber Jihad”, is a new term with a historic background. Yes, though the term has been coined recently, its utility in cyber warfare is well defined. The increase of cyber jihad in India is an alarming issue, which needs to be addressed immediately.
India for cyber security
During the 30th Northern Zonal Council meeting in Jaipur, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that a committee headed by the Union Home Secretary will be planning with the states to come up with a strategy to prevent cyber-crimes and financial frauds on social media. The meeting was attended by various dignitaries including the chief ministers of Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and lieutenant governors of Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ladakh. In addition, Delhi’s deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Punjab’s finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema were also present.
The council was concentrated on ensuring the nation’s cyber security and the safety of its citizens. During the meeting, Union Home Minister urged the Central and State agencies to use the common software developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). He also asked the agencies to work together in solving the cyber security issues to further find out the culprit.
Amit Shah said that between 2006 and 2013, 6 meetings of the regional council and 8 of its standing committee were held. While from 2014 to 2022, 19 meetings of the regional council and 24 meetings of the standing committee were held. He also stressed the need to upskill police officers, public prosecutors, and agencies like Telecom companies. It’s important to assist them in learning advanced technical skills to help prevent cyber-attacks.

India tryst with cyber attack
India has time and again faced border clashes but with modernity encircling the world, cyber-attacks are becoming new dimension of war. Today, the enemies are more dangerously present in our cyberspace, attacking the civilians more closely.
Cyber-attacks in India are becoming rampant with each passing day. In the year 2020, a total of 50,035 cases were registered under cyber-crimes, showing an increase of 11.8 percent in registration over 2019.
In the wake of the BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s statements, the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell claimed that hacker groups from different countries have launched “cyber warfare” against India by attacking the government and private websites and databases.
A similar case was observed in April when American cyber security firm, Recorded Future, revealed that Chinese state-sponsored hackers have targeted India. The strategy was aimed at grabbing information about India’s critical infrastructure building.
Time for India to buckle up
With the ever-increasing presence of individuals in the online world, it has become even more convenient. As terrorists are becoming tech-savvy, it is an intrinsic need for India to up its game in cyber warfare. Though India has taken a major step in this direction with the establishment of the Defence Cyber Agency, there is still a lot to be done. India needs a counter-terrorism policy against cyber jihadis.
There have been times when the Islamist countries tried every bit of effort to harness the Indian capabilities towards development, but it all failed. India will no longer succumb in front of the world leaders. India, itself has now become the world’s leading power.
The Indian people who are well-rooted in their culture and tradition will no longer kneel down for their rights. The recent steps taken to fight cyber-jihad are a proof of that.
