A business runs smoothly when all of its functions favour the benefit of its customers. This is fundamental to every business along with its adherence to all the government laid rules and regulations. No company welcomes any notice or warning from the government. But Ola seems to be unfortunate in this case.

Ola catching fire

Recently, the government has asked EV makers to explain why they should not be penalized amid a series of scooter fires. Companies like Pure EV and Okinawa are also included in this governmental listing. The government has sought an explanation from these EV giants after the continuous danger of fire irrupting into the company’s products.

Reports claim that the companies are given 30 days timeframe, till July end to respond to the government’s notice. If any EV maker is at fault, then the government will take strict penal action.

In addition, the government has also formed two committees to investigate the matter of continuous fire incidents. It was earlier found that many electric vehicles lacked in maintaining basic safety systems, and thus they are becoming a threat to customers. To curb these dangers, the government is continuously issuing guidelines for electric vehicles, to improve their safety systems.

The government had earlier warned the EV makers

This is not the first time that the government has issued notices to EV makers. Earlier, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), functioning under the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, had issued notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors, after their e-scooters exploded in April.

The findings from the government investigation on EV fires highlighted issues with battery cells in nearly all of the electric two-wheeler fire incidents. The experts found defects in the battery as well as the battery design.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had also investigated the electric vehicle fire incidents as tasked by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry. The vehicles were found operating with bad systems that can endanger human lives.

Customer’s dissatisfaction with Ola

There have been numerous cases of EV vehicles catching fire. In March this year, an electric vehicle caught fire in Pune. Ola has then stated, “We are aware of an incident in Pune that happened with one of our scooters and are investigating to understand the root cause and will share more updates in the next few days. We’re in constant touch with the customer who is absolutely safe.”

Apart from this, some customers have complained that they have received a defective and damaged scooter, with dents and scratches. Obviously, it reflects poorly on the company, as no one likes a brand-new vehicle with a dent.

The number of customers getting frightened by Ola vehicles are increasing day by day. It is ultimately contributing to the company’s bad rapport. A customer was fed up to such an extent that he tied his scooter to a donkey in protest. His complaint was that the vehicle stopped working after a few days of delivery of the product, and the customer care was not responding to his calls.

The development can’t come at the cost of human lives

With its introduction in the Indian market, Ola became a hyped entity, with its prevalence in every nook and corner of the country. Its cab services became a mode of easy travel for various customers, who otherwise found it difficult. Further, its launching of electric vehicles was seen as a move towards safeguarding the environment. But soon the company got itself engaged in controversies.

Continuous incidents of fire and lack of proper functioning in the vehicles pose a grave threat to the customers. Despite the need of EV sector surpassing the crude oil sector for the safety of the environment, the lives of the customers cannot be put in jeopardy.
