For Congress karyakartas, Madam Sonia Gandhi is above the law

Have you ever thought about the rationale behind blind fold on the lady justice? The reason is, it signifies that all are equal before the eyes of law. In the pursuit of justice, the system and law don’t discriminate on any grounds of religion, caste, age, gender or the post of the accused or the aggrieved parties. But it seems the top brass of Congress leadership is above all these internationally recognised laws and rules of Jurisprudence. It wants to have special privileges. It is protesting as if its leaders are above the law and beyond questioning as some kind of demiGod.

Sense of entitlement and elitism

On Thursday Morning, 21st July, the Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The Premium Financial investigation agency, ED, will be questioning her in connection with the corruption charges in the National Herald case. While appearing before the ED, daughter Priyanka Gandhi accompanied her elderly ‘ailing’ mother to support her in case of a health issue.

Congress launched a nationwide ‘Satyagrah’ to protest over the questioning of party president Sonia Gandhi by the ED in the National Herald case. The party leaders accused the Modi government of “misusing” central agencies to crush the strong voice of opposition. Congress MPs protested against ED’s questioning in the parliament premises.

Congress leader and Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot condemned the ED action of summoning Madam Sonia Gandhi for questioning. He also sermonised that ED should have given special privileges to Sonia Gandhi. He stressed that ED should have gone to her residence if they wanted to take her responses to their questions. He accused that this is done to harass Sonia Gandhi.

He said,”I condemn the ED action of calling Sonia Gandhi for questioning. The ED should have gone to her residence to take her responses to their questions.”

These obnoxious protests and statements by congress leaders reek of elitism and demonstrate their sense of entitlement. They think that the powers should bend according to their will and they should be allowed to do things of their choice even bypassing laws to do ‘shaddy deals’ like the National Herald case.

Why run away from questioning and fair investigation?

It is a known fact that Politicians are not immune to controversies, accusations and political mudslinging. We often come across claims of opposition blaming the ruling dispensation, of stifling their voices by framing them under false charges. These are the same arguments being used repeatedly by the opposition parties against the Modi government. The Satyagrahas staged by Congress on Sonia Gandhi’s questioning are on the same pretext of misuse of ‘power’ and ‘central agencies’. They are terming the case as political vendetta.

Apart from the vendetta politics, it is also a fact that many politicians to gain, retain power or for their greed, in actuality, commit these crimes and the charges are not frivolous or a result of a rival party’s conspiracy. So, on the face of it how can a democratic system distinguish between the two? Isn’t that the reason why we have independent law enforcement authorities and judiciary? Should not then a major political party be open to scrutiny and defend its innocence through Indian laws? It is clear that it is their angst that how come someone take away their privileges and treat them as a commoner and try them for their irregularities.

Additionally, Are the Gandhis first and only leaders to be questioned by law enforcement agencies? NO, the prime example of proven political vendetta is the falsified Gujarat 2002 case against then CM Narendra Modi. He appeared before the agencies without crying foul and showed his absolute resolve in the laws and institutions of the country. He recently got vindication from the highest court of the country. Not just that, Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy appeared in CBI court in the disproportionate assets case. The leaders of the grand old party should have learnt from their once ally YSRCP Chief Jagan on going through the legal routes to let law run its due course.

Is the opposition leader summoned for alleged criminal cases only an Indian thing? No, apparently, France’s ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy was served a year of house arrest for illegal campaign financing. Similarly around the world, be it Israel or US leaders have been accused of corruption and other grave charges and have to appear before law enforcement agencies. So, Congress should too shun their sense of entitlement and elitism. It is their moral duty as the principal opposition party to lead as an example for citizens to have unwavering faith in the authorities and judiciary. They should not hinder the course of Justice. They should stop whining and let the truth of the cases come out without any new melodrama.
