Dhanush cancels the north-south divide on the global stage

Actors and Actresses, primarily the artists in the entertainment business stay politically neutral, ignoring the left-liberal cabal of the cinema industry. However, only some understand that speaking for the nation, is not at all political, and this makes Dhanush, a favourite of all.

Dhanush on being referred to as ‘Sexy Tamil Friend’

National Award winner, the bug name from South-Indian industry, and the one who has made his mark in Bollywood, Dhanush is all set to make his Hollywood debut through Russo Brothers’ ‘The Gray Mann’. Dhanush is playing the role of an assassin named Avik San.

Recently, in a press conference about the aforementioned film held in Mumbai, the national award-winning actor shared his experiences and addressed the fact that his character was specified as the ‘sexy Tamil friend’. Responding to a question related to the specific address by Chris Evan in The Gray Man, not once but twice, Dhanush made a remarkable statement.

Dhanush cancels the north-south divide

While responding to why his character was relegated to a specific region, Dhanush primarily defended by saying that it was done to add more flavour and detail and there is no harm in referring to him as a Tamilian from India.

However, he accepted that it was not absolutely necessary. Dhanush made a call to lift of the regional and language barriers and come together to make films for the entire country. He said, “I would appreciate it if they collectively called us Indian actors and not south and north. The world has shrunk, and the line is fading. This is the time to come together and make this as one big industry.”

He mentioned that it is a great time to be an actor seeing the fault lines fading and added that “it doesn’t make sense to call anyone as south actors, we are just actors from India.”

Dhanush taking proud in being an ‘actor from India’ is not only embracing the national identity over regional barriers, but is also a tight slap for all the film stars down there, for whom north and Hindi bashing has become a habitual incident.

The North-South divide in India

The political parties that ruled India for a very long time, have been fuelling the rifts prevailing in the subcontinent. And the north-south divide is one amongst them. Speaking  based on documents, North of the Indian peninsula had very different historical experiences than south India. The multiple invasions that came through the passes of Hindukush have constructed and re-constructed the historical experience of the North.

While the southern part remained immune from such invasions. Also, south India was influenced by trade done through waters. This also accounts as the reason behind preserved cultural heritage of the southern states. However, constant efforts have been made to bridge the gaps, which is mandatory for the ‘idea’ of India. And by stating the same Dhanush has given a clear message, forces willing to divide the nation won’t be entertained anymore.
