Turmoil unfolded in Karnataka, after a Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha worker was hacked to death in the state. The state has witnessed several protests since yesterday especially in the Dakshina Kannada district. Bommai responding to the unfortunate incident has not only cancelled the state government’s event, but has also taken some strict actions.
BJYM worker hacked to death in Karnataka
A 32 year old Bhartiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha karyakarta, Praveen Nettaru was hacked to death by bike-borne assailants in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka on Tuesday night.
As per the state police, Nettaru was hacked to death in the night at around 8:30 PM while he was closing his poultry shop in order to leave for home, situated in Bellare. The preliminary probe revealed that the attackers came on two motorcycles with Kerala registration plates and hacked Nettaru’s head and neck. After which Praveen had tried to escape but collapsed outside his house.

As BJYM stages protest, Police suspects a PFI angle
The police are investigating whether the killing may be linked to a Facebook post that was written about Kanhaiya Lal. Nettaru, in his Facebook post dated June 29, had written about the “poor tailor” being beheaded.
As per Indian Express, the manner in which Praveen was killed resembled the modus operandi employed by members of the radical Popular Front of India (PFI) in targeted killings of pro-Hindutva activists in the state in recent years.
The angered BJYM workers have not only resorted to mass resignations, but have also accused their own government of failing to protect Hindu activists in the state.
Bommai sets up new commando force to tackle anti-nationals
Responding to the anger of party workers, CM Bommai had ensured that the culprits of Praveen will be brought to justice. CM said, “I strongly condemn the killing of Praveen. We will ensure that the culprits will be brought to justice,”
In addition to that, CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced that the state government would form a commando force. Also called as anti-terrorist squad, they will have special training, intelligence, ammunition and resources to go after anti-national and terror groups conspiring to disrupt the peace and stir communal tension in the state. He said, “I will sit with the officials and a fool-proof team will be constituted.”

Bommai also noted that the killing of Pravin is part of a conspiracy by anti-national and terrorist forces to disturb the peace. This can be viewed as a step towards clipping the wings of Popular Front of India (PFI) and like-minded radical organisations. As per Bommai, the special commando force will operate fully independent of the other enforcement agencies and will only deal with such cases of assassinations.
The CM in press conference said, “Along with routine investigation, stricter laws and punishment to completely eliminate organisations and individuals involved in such terror activities such as PFI, we have decided to raise a specially trained commando force in the state, along with training and ammunition support for it.”
Bommai cancels Janotsava
In the wake of the incident, the party has cancelled all the events planned earlier to mark BJP’s three years in office. The Karnataka BJP has planned an official event at Soudha and ‘Janotsava’, a mega rally at Doddaballapur, for the aforementioned cause.

Bommai decided to cancel the events, in the face of anger and outrage from the party’s cadre. In the post-midnight press conference Bommai said, “There will be no celebration. My conscience did not allow me to go ahead after watching the pain of Praveen’s mother and his family.”
The event, especially the Doddaballapur rally, was politically crucial for the party, as the party is attempting to build its presence in the old Mysuru region. The plans were made accordingly as assembly elections are due in the state for 2023. The state of Karnataka has been in turmoil for many political killings, adding to that is the Hijab controversy. What holds for Bommai, only time will tell?
