After 75 years of India’s independence, UK is all set to swear in an Indian as its PM

Sunak Johnson

Indians cherished the moment when a woman of Indian origin became the Vice President of the United States of America. From Indra Nooyi becoming the CEO of Pepsi Bottling Group to Sundar Pichai handling Alphabet, there is a sense of pride that we Indians take when someone having Indian roots goes on to conquer the West. Something of the same sort may be witnessed very soon in the land of Britishers as well. But are we just delighted to witness someone becoming the person of power in the West, or there are other prospects too.

Boris Johnson resigns

Boris Johnson, the journalist turned politician who rose to the pinnacles of power riding the Brexit wave, tried to cling to his position till the last minute. However, he had to announce his resignation on Thursday. Boris Johnson is the first PM in the entire history of the United Kingdom who had to resign. Johnson got a historic mandate in 2019 when Tories won 365 seats out of 650.

Despite having the ability to brush off crises, Johnson succumbed to the crisis manufactured by him that pushed the Conservative party into an acute identity crisis, like the ‘Partygate scandal’ and U-turns over tax policy. Tories had started to call Johnson more of a liability than an asset. And Tories after trying at failing at every attempt to oust Johnson pulled the Ace from the deck, ‘the rebellion of Rishi Sunak.’

Rishi Sunak outfoxed Johnson

Boris was already facing rebellion from within his pack and the resignation of Rishi Sunak aggravated the ongoing rebellion against him. 40 ministers and aides also resigned following Sunak’s rebellion, and they had put forth a simple demand of Boris Johnson’s resignation. Sunak was waiting for the appropriate time to open his front against the UK PM and at the final time, Boris failed to save himself.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that it was Sunak who helped Tories to defeat Johnson. Sunak is a famous face there and more than one the Britons believe that Sunak should be Boris Johnson’s replacement. And Sunak is all set to become the first person of Indian descent to become the PM of the UK and lead a British political party.

The Indian aspect

It is a well known fact that Rishi Sunak was the catalyst force in the negotiation of Free Trade Agreement being negotiated between India and UK. Sunak has also emphasised in the past, that the financial services sector holds out and exciting prospects of closer exchange between India and UK with a FTA being negotiated between the two countries. He had also expressed his confidence over the FTA draft to be ready by Deepawali.

There lies enormous opportunities in the financial service sector for both the countries. The negotiations are aimed at achieving fair and balanced trade. The trade deal will stimulate growth and employment in both the countries and help diversify the supply chains by making it easier and cheaper for more businesses. And with the man who has been the catalyst of the deal at the helm of affairs of the state, India’s prospects are only going to get stronger. Also, Johnson had gained ire of the Indians for his time and again support of Johnson to the Khalistani militants.

There has been a constant rise in the number of Indian origin politicians around the world wherever there is a democracy, from Rishi Sunak, Preeti Patel to Harjit Sajjan. And this is clearly a testament of how far the Indian community has come from once being the colony of the English to today all set to be the first person of the United Kingdom.
