Presidential elections are right around the corner and both the ruling as well as the opposition parties are busy finalising their candidate. While there is no buzz in the BJP’s camp regarding the finalisation of its candidate. The opposition parties are facing difficulties trying to zero in on a candidate for the polls. The reason being, the opposition has no candidate at all as their offers are being denied by leader after leader.
Gopal Krishna Gandhi says no to candidacy
On Monday, Gopal Krishna Gandhi refused opposition’s offer to be nominated as its candidate for the upcoming Presidential polls. Reports suggest that Gandhi was persuaded by opposition leaders for contesting the upcoming presidential elections.
In his statement Gandhi said that several opposition leaders have done him the honour of thinking of him for the opposition’s candidature in the upcoming presidential polls. While refusing the offer he said, “having considering the matter deeply I see that the Opposition’s candidate should be one who will generate a national consensus and a national atmosphere besides Opposition unity.”

Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the 77 year old former bureaucrat has served as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka and is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C Rajagopalachari. He had earlier contested for the post of Vice President in 2017, but lost to VP M Venkaiah Naidu.
Opposition is candidate-less
Gandhi is the third man in the row to decline candidacy for the presidential polls from the Oppositions’ camp. Gandhi’s refusal came two days after National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah withdrew his name as the joint opposition candidate. Farooq did this dreaming that he has a “lot more active politics” left ahead for him and he wanted to work for Jammu and Kashmir terming the situation as a “critical juncture”.
Before Abdullah, NCP leader Sharad Pawar had declined the offer to be Opposition’s joint presidential candidate. After his refusal, Mamata Banerjee had suggested the names of Abdullah and Gandhi in the opposition meeting. Despite several meetings, the opposition parties have failed to build a common consensus and the same opposition parties have been trying to trick the voters of India by forming alliances during the elections, promising anti-BJP government.
On the other hand the ruling party is seeing no ruckus. The party leadership has entrusted party president JP Nadda and Union Minister Rajnath Singh with the task of reaching out to various parties across the political spectrum to build a consensus for the top post.
After getting refused from three political giants, the man on which the opposition camp is betting is Yashwant Sinha. Well, what benefit he can be of, only time will tell.
