Owaisi is now the fourth pillar of Maha Vikas Aghadi

Maha Vikas Aghadi Owaisi

Support to the alliance, still differences with an ally, something of this sort has happened in the state of Maharashtra in the wake of Rajya Sabha polls that concluded recently. Asaduddin Owaisi extended support to the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance and hence became the fourth pillar of the MVA coalition.

AIMIM extended support to the MVA

Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has been spreading its roots way faster than expected. AIMIM has a presence in some major states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra among others. And when a party has stakes, it gains power and further rises its stakes. The same is happening with Asaduddin Owaisi and his party All India Majilis-E-Ittedhadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), and that was clearly visible in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls, where Owaisi dictated his legislators to vote for the Maha Vikas Aghadi candidates, of which Shiv Sena is the main ally.

The MVA top brass has time and again accused the BJP of nurturing AIMIM as its B-team. However, the polling pattern in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls, makes it quite visible that the so-called political parties can go to any extent to fulfil their anti-BJP agenda.

The party officially accepted that it voted for the Congress candidate in order to defeat the Bhartiya Janata Party. AIMIM’s lone MP in Maharashtra said that while his party has “political and ideological differences with the Sena,” the party’s MLAs would cast their vote for Congress candidate Imran Pratapgarhi. The move to vote for Pratapgarhi is also being seen as a way to further expand in the state of Uttar Pradesh banking on his credentials.

Voting for Congress: A big smokescreen

Though party of Owaisi has justified its stand in favour of the Congress party and the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, the decision is still raising eyebrows. The move has also shed light on AIMIM’s constant push to be a part of the Shiv Sena-led MVA alliance. The Rajya Sabha maths presents a similar picture.

The two AIMIM votes constituted ‘excess’ Congress votes, as the quota was 42 and Congress had 44 MLAs. Hence, according to the agreement between the three MVA ally parties, the votes went into Shiv Sena’s account.

In March this year, the AIMIM had reached out to the Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to be a part of the MVA coalition to form a broad anti-BJP pool to which Sena has responded that it was a ploy of the BJP to discredit the Sena’s ‘Hindutva’ credentials, an ideology that Uddhav Thackeray had ditched way before.

However, the whole chaos can be summed up in just one statement that has its source in Raj Thackeray’s stance on AIMIM supporting the MVA alliance. Thackeray remarked, “They don’t hesitate to take the support of AIMIM who are the direct descendants of the Nizam. The Shiv Sena’s Hindutva lies exposed.”
