Neeraj Chopra – The athlete who chose not to be a celebrity

Neeraj Chopra Record

A person who remains humble even in his/her success, scripts history. This line perfectly suits India’s sporting icon Neeraj Chopra. Ever since he won gold for India at the Olympic stage, he has become a household name. But what has been his greatest strength/success are his humbleness and the continuous hunger to achieve more. The young champ has yet again made India proud at the global stage.

Neeraj Chopra Breaks own National Record yet again

The ace Indian Javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, broke his own national record at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. With a humongous second throw of 89.30 metres Neeraj Chopra improved his previous personal best and National record of 88.07 metres in Patiala in March 2021.

Evidently, the Paavo Nurmi Games is considered among the biggest in the track-and-field events. The event witnessed a tough competition among four of the five best throwers in the world including Peters, Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, Germany’s Julian Weber and Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott.

The audience witnessed a nail biting finish, with the best competing for the podium with their personal best at play. With his first throw of 86.92 metres, Neeraj Chopra set the bar very high. However, in his third, fourth and fifth attempts he overstepped the marking line and his throws were not considered. He ended the event with a throw of 85.85 metres.

Finland’s 25-year-old Oliver Helander stepped up a notch and registered gold in his name. He threw at 89.83 metres in his second attempt. With his 89.30 m throw, Neeraj Chopra had to be content with silver at this mega event.

Notably, the latest throw took Chopra to fifth-best throw of the season in the world. Chopra will now participate in the Kuortane Games in Finland before participating in the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League to be held in Sweden.

With this impressive feat, he has also hinted at what lies ahead for the World Javelin Championship scheduled in the next month of July. To train properly for the tournaments in Europe’s backyard, he shifted his base to Finland for a 28-day training camp with his coach.

Gold for Neeraj Chopra: India’s First at the Athletics events

It was the last day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. India had already bettered its previous Olympics tally with 5 total medals in its kitty.

Then we received a pleasant surprise in the form of ace Javelin thrower Neeraj. Neeraj Chopra set the record straight with his first throw in the qualification round and clearly highlighted the fact that he means business for India this time, and will not settle without a medal.

The dream of Gold was very farfetched as no Indian had won gold in the athletics events of the Olympics. But with his first throw at 87.58 M he set up a mountain of a task for others to climb. With that he clinched India’s first Gold medal in athletics.

Hunger for Success

For a nation which has underperformed to its full potential, even one medal can be a rally point for months if not for years. But the champ Neeraj Chopra made it clear that he will not be content with a single medal, and has a lot to achieve in the future.

The youngsters have a lot to learn from this real role model who has not run behind success. Rather he has focused on improving his skills and personal best throw. He has been committed to cross the 90 metre barrier mark which he missed by a whisker in the recently ended event. He has proved that he is in there for a long haul and will make India proud many more times in the future.

It is good to see that a young guy like him has a calm head and a vision for the future rather than losing sight after a small victory. His life is an inspiration and he is a true role model to be looked at to seek inspiration from. At a time when the youngsters are trying to project themselves as an Instagram celeb, he is proving that he is better off as a performer than to be a celebrity.
