Egypt knocking on Indian doors for its wheat
Egypt has made a contract with India to buy 1,80,000 tonnes of wheat. However, the quantity is less than the previously agreed one. It is looking at ways to extract more flour from grain and even use potatoes in bread making to trim imports, Egypt’s supply minister said on June 26.
The Supply Minister, Aly Moselhy said, “Based on what the supplier said, the condition was that the wheat has to be at the ports, then it would be available. We had agreed on 500,000 tonnes, turns out [the supplier] has 180,000 tonnes in the port.” He also talked about the ongoing talks with Russian suppliers for wheat purchases.
Earlier in May, Moselhy said that it had agreed to buy 5,00,000 tonnes of wheat from India. Though, India banned wheat exports in the same month but exempted countries like Egypt with food security needs.
Egypt, which is one of the world’s biggest wheat importers, earlier used to buy wheat from the Black Sea region. However, that supply got disrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Egypt is a country whose wheat stock is mainly based on imports made from different countries. On the other hand, it is currently running with a scarcity of wheat stock.

India has been a helping hand to the world for years
As per the data from Statista, the value of wheat that has been exported from India came as a blessing in disguise for the world during times of crisis. In 2015, the export value of wheat was USD 828.75 million. While in 2017, it suffered a recession and touched USD 66.85 million. Further, in 2019, the numbers went to USD 52.41 million. As the recession cannot hold much, the numbers got a spike once again and touched a peak of USD 549.67 million.
India has always maintained a well-performing history where the Sone Ki Chidiya emerged as a saviour for many nations in times of distress. Especially, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the entire world was suffering from a sudden imbalance in wheat production. During these doldrum times, India came forward to fill the empty patches of the world.
India was criticized for the notion that it never developed
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has excelled in almost every aspect. Whether it’s improved infrastructure or building strong international relations, India has emerged as an example for the world to follow.
During the time when India was facing a wheat shortage, it banned the export of its wheat stock to other countries. However, exempted a few nations that were in desperate need of their survival.
Initially, India was being criticized by various nations for its imposing of a wheat export ban. Various nations claimed India as a country that did not want to maintain its foreign relations. But the reality was not the prejudiced propaganda created against India. Rather, India never denied supplying its wheat export and it just restricted to nations who were deprived of the same.
As the importance of India is gradually being accepted by world leaders. Earlier, it was believed that the recent religious controversies erupting in India will result in the Islamic nation’s refusal of Indian grains. But it didn’t happen because of the well-known fact that “The world needs India”.
