For decades, Politicians sitting in the Capital gave step-motherly treatment to the development needs of the Northeastern states. The aspirations of the citizens were neglected as the region didn’t have major sway in national politics. Disappointed youth was misguided to take up arms against the government. But after the election of PM Modi at the helm of affairs, things have started to change. The government’s development model and peace talks with these misguided youths have brought them back into the folds of democracy. The efforts of the Assam and the Union government has been vindicated by the results of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
KAAC Election Results
In September last year, the government signed a peace accord, named, ‘Karbi Anglong Accord’, with five militant outfits operating in Karbi Anglong district. So, the Elections to the KAAC on 8th June were the first such elections after the accord. The Council has a total strength of 30 with four nominated members. The results for the 26 elected seats were announced on Sunday, 12th June. The Assam State Election Commission declared the Bharatiya Janata Party as the winner in all 26 seats. The Congress is the main opposition party in the state but it failed to even open its tally.

Peace talks and strengthening trust in a democratic setup
It was not easy to bring these armed groups into the democratic setup. But with the result of successful peace talks a peace accord was signed last year. Under the ‘Karbi Anglong Accord’ around 1000 militants surrendered. The government had announced a special development package of ₹ 1,000 crore for the Karbi area. The Centre committed to allocate Rs 500 crore for Infrastructure development of the region in next five years. Additionally, another ₹ 500 crores would be provided for the development of the area. The tripartite peace agreement also provided for the rehabilitation of the cadres of armed groups.
It is great to see that the area has been rid of mindless violence. The result will embolden the ruling party to keep moving on this development path keeping a path of peaceful dialogue open with the leftover armed groups. As far as political signal is concerned BJP seems to have cemented their place in the North-eastern states and completely routed the Congress.
