G20 Summit in India. In Jammu and Kashmir

Since the abrogation of special status to Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan has tried every trick to bring militancy and terrorism into the Union Territory. On every multilateral platform, Pakistan tries its best to bring consensus against India to criticize the country on the issue. But, the diplomatic maneuvering of India built such a strong shield of foreign policy that no country had the guts to go against the nation’s stand. With ambassadors’ tour to Kashmir to continue talks with like-minded countries provided India with unprecedented support in the world and failed the nefarious attempt of Pakistan. And, the recent decision of the government to host G-20 meetings in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) will further bust the propaganda of Pakistan.

G-20 meetings in UT of J&K

Recently the Jammu and Kashmir administration released a notice related to the Constitution of Committee for overall coordination of G-20 meetings to be held in the UT of J&K. The order dated 23 June 2022, states that a five-member committee, comprising Principal Secretary to the Government, Housing & Urban Development Department (Chairman), Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, Transport Department (Member), Administrative Secretary, Tourism Department (Member), Administrative Secretary, Hospitality & Protocol Department (Member), Administrative Secretary, Culture Department (Member), has made to coordinate the G-20 meetings to be held in the UT.

Further, the Principal Secretary to the Government, Housing & Urban Development Department is also nominated as UT level Nodal Officer to coordinate the arrangements for G-20 meetings in the UT.

During the 15th G-20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2020 under the leadership of Saudi Arabia, it was decided that the G-20 Presidency will be held by Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023, and Brazil in 2024. Following this, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was appointed as India’s Sherpa for the G20 in September 2021 and according to the Ministry of External Affairs, India will hold the G-20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and convene the first G20 leaders’ Summit in 2023.

Importance of the bold decision to convene meetings in J&K

G20 is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States of America) and the European Union (EU). The grouping tries to address the issues of the global economy, financial stability, climate change, and sustainable development. With the grouping of the largest economies of the world, it accounts for 90% of global GDP, around 80% of international global trade, around 2/3 of the world’s population, and 84% of all fossil fuel emissions.

In a way, the grouping runs the world economy and influences the geopolitics of the world. Its decisions are mostly inclined towards economic development and international trade. The globalization-induced integrated businesses have paved the way for the formation of the grouping and its decision has repercussions on almost all parts of the world.

The decision of the government to hold the meeting in UT of J&K has significant meaning in the light of Pakistan’s constant attempt to raise the Kashmir issue on international forums again and again. The convention of meetings in the UT will boost the confidence of the world in India’s democratic setup and the years of fake propaganda of Pakistan will fall like a house of cards.

For years, Pakistan has been crying like a baby on every multilateral platform against India on the issue of J&K. With the support of Muslim countries, they constantly run propaganda about Human Rights violations. After the abrogation of Article 370, the propaganda was intensified as due to the precautionary measures, the government had increased the surveillance in the state.

Although, on a rotation basis the government had arranged a tour of multiple country’s ambassadors to the UT of J&K, but the Pakistan’s propaganda was still going on. Further, the envisaged goal of economic prosperity needed a strong push for investment.

The government’s decision to convene the meetings is in the same direction. On one hand, it will bust the Pakistan’s fake propaganda and on the other, the presence of the world’s biggest economies will give positive recognition to UT. When the world’s attention will be on the positive part of the region, a beautiful state with enormous business opportunities is likely to secure investment & open the floodgates of opportunities.
