CM Soren punishes Jharkhand police for punishing Jihadi rioters

Jharkhand police

Peace is the prerequisite for progress and rule of law is the bare minimum to maintain peace and security in the state. But states which are neck-deep in Minority appeasement politics have allowed Islamist mobs to give law and order a toss. The Jharkhand government seems to have compromised with the progress of the state. They have in a way succumbed to appeasement politics. For that, it is letting the Islamists mob have a free hand to spread chaos, anarchy, and bloodshed.

Actions on Law Enforcers: A move to appease the Rioters

On 15th June, a day after the Police had put up the posters of 33 alleged rioters, the Jharkhand government seems to have penalised the law enforcers itself. The administration in a move to appease its Muslim vote bank asked the Police officials to explain the reason behind public display of pictures of rioters. These alleged Muslims rioters pelted stones on Hanuman Mandir and tried to vandalise it.

Principal Secretary Ekka who is also the state Home Secretary wrote a letter to Ranchi SSP. In the letter he asked the SSP to submit his explanations in a stipulated time of 2 days. He termed the act of Police as “illegal” citing Allahabad High Court order. He said, “Posters of people part of violent protest were put up by Ranchi Police on June 14, in which many people’s names and other information have also been given. This is illegal and against the order of the Allahabad High Court in PIL 532/2020 dated March 9, 2020.”

Earlier, on the 10th of June Friday, Muslims gathered in huge numbers to protest against the alleged blasphemy in a TV debate. What was supposed to be an auspicious day for them to offer Namaz was turned into a tool for violent protest. In Ranchi, Police had to resort to firing to stop the murderous Islamist mob in which two protestors were shot dead.

Police acted on the directions of Governor

After which , on June 14, Ranchi Police had put up posters of 33 stone pelters at various places in the city, following an order from the Governor of Jharkhand. The state Public Relations Department had issued a release quoting the statements made by Governor Bais. It stated the Governor saying, “Find out details of all protesters and those who have been caught, make their names/addresses public, make their hoardings by displaying their photographs at main places in the city so that the public can also identify them and help police.”

According to the release, Bais asked,”People who are spreading rumours through or on social media about these incidents, have you identified them and taken any action against them? All such people need to be identified and punished.”

So, the Police had also issued these posters on social media and asked the general public to help in identification and whereabouts of these alleged radicalised rioters. With this, citizens started comparing the actions of Jharkhand Police with its counterparts in UP.

Muslim votes decide the way government acts

But this comparison in strictly enforcing the rule of law became a reason of worry for the so called “secular” coalition government of Jharkhand. The alliance partners started crying that this will give wrong signals among the Muslim community and it will dent their vote bank. The Ministers of the government started criticising the act of the Jharkhand Police. After which the Police had to remove these posters claiming to“make some changes”. But the posters have not been put out again which reflects that the government gave priority to Muslim appeasement rather than to punish the culprits who pelted stones on Hanuman Mandir.

BJP leaders termed it as a act of kneeling before the rioters and called it the tactics of Muslim appeasement.

So, Acts like these in which law enforcers are penalised to appease its vote bank shakes the morale of the security forces. It also emboldens the confidence of the rioters and anti-social elements. The act of publicly naming and shaming for proper identification and then booking them under relevant sections will create deterrence against such crimes in future. But it is foolhardy to expect the government to come out of the narrow mindset of appeasement politics. If things keep on going like this, the Governor should intervene and take relevant actions to upload rule of law including necessary directions to the government failing which the last resort of suggesting President Rule in the state.
