Arif Mohammad Khan has decoded the root cause behind the menace of Udaipur

The gruesome Udaipur murder of Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal by two Jihadis in broad daylight has shaken the conscience of every Indian to the core. So, it becomes necessary to take this as an inflexion point, and bring in drastic reforms to curb the menace of Islamic radicalisation once and for all. But we can’t devise a proper strategy to curb it unless we have properly analysed the root cause of the problem. So, it is the need of the hour to unearth the main culprits who are responsible for such an abhorrent and horrific level of radicalisation.

Nurturing Radicalisation in sprouting minds

India is a secular democratic country, with proper laws for virtually every thinkable situation. Does that mean India has laws for ‘hurting religious sentiments’ of certain communities? The answer is yes, it has been covered under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Thus, the question arises why is so much intolerance prevalent in the name of hurting religious sentiments? Who is ingraining such gory and inhumane things as beheading someone on mere claims of blasphemy? Who is responsible for this systematic radicalisation and teaching of savagery and barbaric ways of the so-called ‘Justice’ in a civilised 21st century?

Evidently many Islamic scholars and political observers have analysed the ‘Madrasas’ as one of the reasons for teaching such violent and abominable acts. Kerala Governor, Arif Mohammad Khan, speaking on the brutal killing of innocent Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal, talked about the rampant rise of radicalisation and held the Madrasas responsible for it. He pointed to this festering disease responsible for such a radical mindset. He stated that “Children are being taught in Madrasas that punishment for blasphemy is beheading.”

In the name of God’s will and utopian heaven, pliable minds are brainwashed to commit such gory acts of terror. He also emphasised the need to reform in the Madrasa curriculum, as they teach violent and gruesome bigoted things like beheading someone in the name of God’s will.

He said, “We worry when symptoms come but refuse to notice the deeper disease. Children are being taught in Madrasas that punishment for blasphemy is beheading. It’s being taught as the law of God. What’s being taught there should be examined.”

Religious Indoctrination and Radicalisation

Several organisations have pointed to the menace of rampant Radicalisation in Madrasas. A research study conducted by European Foundation of South Asian Studies talked in detail about the Radicalisation in the name of religion, and how young children are being indoctrinated, ingrained hatred towards non-believers. It talks in detail about the modus operandi of the many Madrasas in Radicalisation of young minds.

It states that these Madrasas work usually in remote areas and restrict juveniles from any contact from outside. They are indoctrinated in sectarian extremism, hatred for non-Muslims and Anti-western beliefs. Further, a report published by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) talked about recruitment of children by terrorist groups.

The first step towards a solution is acknowledging the problem and analysing the root cause of it. The government should take necessary steps to reform the Madrasa education system and slash away all the radical elements in Madrasa school’s curriculum. Efforts of some state governments like Uttar Pradesh and Assam in reforming the Madrasa education system should be adopted, and further necessary steps need to be taken so that such horrific acts of terror don’t get repeated in Civilised society like India.
