The Hyderabad Murder and the caste politics behind it

They say love conquers all. Love is a force that has the power to be triumphant over hatred. But the recent murder in Hyderabad shows that love cannot conquer the caste and religion divide.

Hyderabad Murder case

Amidst all the Hindu-Muslim violence and controversies, a Hindu man attempted to go beyond communal differences and married a Muslim woman. But not all good deeds come with a good consequence. Thus, the man reportedly was stabbed to death at the Saroornagar Tehsildar office in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Police, however, have detained the main accused along with others in the case. The accused belongs to members of his wife’s family.

The couple, Nagaraju and Ashrin Sulthana (aka Pallavi), after being in a relationship for one year, decided to tie the knot on January 22 this year. ACP P Sreedhar Reddy reported that the brother and brother-in-law of the girl were not in favour of the marriage.

Reportedly, Nagaraju was attacked by the goons riding a bike at the Saroornagar Tehsildar office at 9 pm. The victim’s brother-in-law and his relative pushed him to the ground. He was then beaten up with rods and stabbed with a knife, resulting in his death on the spot, as per the information by the Police.

Billapuram Nagaraju, aged 25, lived in Marredpally, Secunderabad. He was a salesman at a well-known Malakpet, the Old City. The investigation has begun. ACP Reddy informed that the inquiry has revealed that the killing was a result of love marriage. “We’re looking at it further. Based on the investigation, I’ll provide further information,” the ACP said.

A senior police official informed that “The woman’s brother was against her in getting married to a person belonging to another religion and decided to “eliminate” the man.”

“No communal angle, this is an isolated incident. The accused was against the wedding, he killed the deceased to take revenge,” police said.

Caste politics behind the incident

If we dive in to know what actually happened, the murder took place because of the caste differences and not because of love marriage. The reports suggest that “Dalit Man has been killed in Hyderabad for allegedly for Marrying ‘Upper’ Caste Muslim Woman.”

The woman belonged to the Syed Muslim caste and thus the superiority complex of her family did not allow them to marry their daughter to a man belonging to a lower caste.

While the ‘secular’ Muslim community accuses Hindus to be intolerant, the case suggests that the so-called secular community still follows the patriarchy and considers its women as the object. It is high time that people rise above ‘Jai Bheem Jai Meem’ and take a look at what actually is happening.
