“No Muslim Woman wants her Husband to Have 3 Wives” Himanta sets the tone for UCC

No force on Earth can stop an idea whose time has come. It seems that the time has come for Article 44 to bear fruits. The BJP-ruled states one after another had hinted towards the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in their respective states. Amongst many voices echoing the need for UCC, Assam CM too has joined the chorus.

Chorus for UCC

The implementation of UCC throughout India has always been a matter of debate and discussion. But the latest level of sincerity and statements, from higher echelons, for UCC suggests that soon many BJP-ruled states will be following the footsteps of Goa and will have uniform laws for all its citizens. Himanta Biswa Sarma while responding to the UCC question said, it is not Himanta’s issue, it is the issue of all Muslim women.

The feisty Assam CM said that no Muslim woman wants their husband to remarry and the only thing to ensure justice for Muslim women after nullifying Triple Talaq is the implementation of UCC. He said, “Everybody wants UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home 3 other wives. Ask any Muslim woman. UCC not my issue, it’s issue for all Muslim women. If they are to be given justice, after the scrapping of Triple Talaq, UCC will have to be brought.”

Prior to this the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi had objected to the UCC and said, “We are against it. The Law Commission has also said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not needed in India.” But the learned barrister has forgotten how the Supreme Court has many times emphasised on the need to implement UCC in the country. In a related case, the honourable court observed that “The time has now come for the legislatures to provide for a uniform code on marriage and divorce as envisaged by the constitution under Article 44.”

BJP relentlessly working on its commitments made in the Manifesto

The Saffron party calls its manifesto “Sankalp Patra” (document of resolutions). It claims to work for the betterment of all by following the motto “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas”. For this there should not be any discrimination between citizens on line of religion, colour, caste and other bases. BJP has a consistent opinion that only Article 44 can overcome the hurdles created because of the rigidity of Abrahmic religions.

CM of Himachal Pradesh re-initiated this cause which was backed up by the Deputy CM of UP Keshav Maurya. The firm stand of the party was later on emboldened by the former BJP President Amit Shah in Bhopal. He said, “Issues like CAA, Ram Mandir, Article 370 & triple talaq have been resolved. Now it is time to focus on the UCC.”

BJP party leaders are not just voicing about UCC, some real actions have been taken in this direction. For this, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced to constitute a committee of experts for the implementation of UCC. The party has a good track record when it comes to fulfilling major promises of its manifesto, be it the Ram Mandir, CAA, Article 370 and Triple Talaq. Furthermore, the Himanta administration is known for its firm decisions and no-nonsense policy. Hence rest assured the time has come for UCC and many states will soon implement the much-demanded UCC.
