India at UNSC: Bucha killings

Since the day Russia began its “military operation” in Ukraine, India at United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has stressed dialogue. India which has been constantly insisting the two countries for peace talks and maintained a neutral stance has condemned the civilian killings at Bucha, Ukraine.

Images of civilian bodies littering the streets of Bucha had sparked global outrage. India at UNSC condemned the killings as “deeply disturbing” and supported the call for an independent probe. An independent probe has been demanded to look into the happenings in the Ukrainian town Bucha, which is under Russia’s control.

India calls for an independent inquiry

In the UNSC meeting, addressed for the first time by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, India’s Permanent Representative to UN, T.S.Tirumurti  said, “Recent reports of civilian killings in Bucha are deeply disturbing. We unequivocally condemn these killings and support the call for an independent investigation.” President Zelenskyy has referred to the happenings in Bucha as “genocide”.

Tirumurti shed light on the fact that there has been no significant improvement regarding the security situation as well as its humanitarian consequences. India expected a positive response from the international community in the matter of humanitarian assistance. Tirumurti called for guarantees for the safe passage of humanitarian and medical supplies. He mentioned how the ongoing conflict has resulted in inflation that has become a burden on the shoulders of the developing nations.

Mr. Tirumurti ended with a statement clarifying India’s stance, “when innocent lives are at stake, diplomacy must prevail as the only viable option.”

India not in a mood to toe West’s line

India has abstained from voting against Russia on drafts condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. New Delhi has maintained a diplomatic balance on the conflict and has insisted upon dialogue and has advocated for an end to violence.

Though there have been several instances after the commencement of the “military operation” when the West especially the United States of America has attempted to threaten India for its stance. Be it abstaining from UNSC resolution, or oil deal with Russia, the West has never left a stone unturned to threaten and humiliate India, the Daleep Singh case being a recent example.

However, the Modi-Jaishankar duo has shown the West its place and has firmly established India’s stand. New Delhi’s stand was so absolute that even the White House entered damage control mode after the humiliating speech of Daleep Singh.

India under the leadership of PM Modi knows what is best for her national interest and with EAM like Jaishankar, who is known for his befitting replies, the duo is showing the West its place.
