The Mughal Card: How Ukraine has Stumped Indian Liberals

Liberals, India, Indian, Mughals, Ukraine

Ever Since Vladimir Putin sent Russian troops into Ukrainian territory, Indian Liberals started extending their unconditional support to the Zelensky administration. However, they are in for a great surprise as Ukraine stands in stark contrast to their claims about the Mughal era.

Ukrainian ambassador visits MEA

For the second time in two weeks, Ukraine’s ambassador to India tried to stoke Indians’ emotions to gain support for his country. This time Igor Polikha has compared the Russian attack to the Mughals’ attack on India. Moreover, he also suggested that modern-day Ukrainians are akin to Rajputs of India.

Polikha visited the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) after the death of an Indian student in his country. He used this opportunity to appeal to PM Modi to stop Vladimir Putin.

Envoy compared Ukrainians with Rajputs

Comparing Ukrainians to unfortunate Rajputs of India, Polkhia pleaded, “It’s like the massacre arranged by the Mughals against Rajputs. We are asking all influential world leaders, among them Modi Ji, to use every resource against Putin to stop bombing and shelling,”

Polikha also thanked the Indian government for extending humanitarian assistance to his country. He also expressed condolences over the death of an Indian student in Ukraine and said that he died because Russians are now targeting civilian areas.

Polikha went against the narrative of liberals

Polikha’s invoking of Indian history has come off as a shock for Indian liberals. Specifically, his categorical insinuation that Mughals were not the ones who made India a better place, but instead they killed Indians in masses is considered akin to blasphemy in the Indian liberals’ circle.

Up until now, the liberal lobby has been united in its stand for Mughals. Despite thousands of documentary evidence of Mughals committing genocides against Hindus, liberals have been asserting that Mughals were good for the people of India.

The Mughal glorification found its way into the education system of India through Marxist Historians. These post-modern scholars teaching in left-tilted universities like JNU pushed this in the curriculum of higher education. The same historians were then consulted for writing History books to be read by kids studying in schools.

Most Indians had no idea that Mughals were tyrants

Generations of Indian children grew up believing that it was Mughals who made India a Golden bird, though the fact is exactly the opposite. When they grew up they watched Mughals’ glorifying Bollywood movies and TV serials which reinstated that falsified claims in their mind. Even supposedly educational series like Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru did not contradict this.

Only after PM Modi came to power in 2014 that academicians begin raising their voices against this distortion of history. However, those who baked their bread and butter refused to give up and kept making movies glorifying those tyrants. Recently, Naseeruddin Shah, the supposedly intellectual of Bollywood claimed that Mughals were refugees.

Owaisi criticises envoy

Not just liberals, leaders of Muslims like Asaduddin Owaisi also consider Mughals as better angels of Invaders. He has criticised the Ukrainian envoy for his statement against Mughals. He asked Igor whether he was trying to seek attention and also suggested that Igor’s statement reeks of Islamophobia.

Now that truth about Mughals is not hidden from anyone around the world, the time is right for India to eliminate the literature glorifying them from Indian books.
