Lata Mangeshkar, often referred to as Lata Didi has left the planet for her heavenly abode.  Lata Mangeshkar, a playback singer had a career of almost seven decades. The millennials and Gen Z generations have grown up listening to her songs. Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’ is still sung on several occasions of National Interest. Referred to as ‘The Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar sang for Madhubala to Madhuri Dixit. Her last recorded piece was Gayatri Mantra.

Tanmay Bhat: A self-claimed ‘comedian’

Lata Mangeshkar who was often looked upon as an incarnation of Maa Saraswati was disrespected by self-claimed comedian Tanmay Bhat. In the year 2016, Tanmay Bhat released a Snapchat video with the title ‘Sachin Vs Lata Civil War’, in which he pitted two larger than life icons, Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar against each other and abused them in the crassest language possible.

Mocking ‘The Nightingale of India’

A woman who was worshipped as the living incarnation of goddess Saraswati was mocked by Bhat. During a standup act, Tanmay joked about her age and her face. Not to forget, how he joked that since Jon Snow died so she too must die. Disrespecting a legend in the way Bhat did was not at all comedy. Tanmay did was tasteless and insensitive.

Comedy and Crassness have nothing in common. Comedy is an art and Crassness is hooliganism. Tanmay Bhat belongs to the latter category.

The Controversy

This video went viral on the internet and for no good reason. Bhat gathered flaks from all sides. A controversy erupted immediately condemning Bhat’s action. Some even demanded his arrest and video to be taken down immediately.  Several sections of the society blasted on Bhat’s crassness. Some political parties even came out demanding action against Bhat for mocking the national legend. The video has been taken down since.

Lata Mangeshkar united the whole nation when she sang ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ during the Sino-Indian War. From romance to fun to nationalism, her voice suited all genres. Lata Mangeshkar was laid to rest with full state honours on Sunday.
