Prem Kumar Dhumal

On April 10th, 1944, Prem Kumar Dhumal was born. He is an Indian politician who ran for Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2017 Himachal Assembly Elections, but lost his seat. Prem Kumar Dhumal was the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh twice before, from March 1998 to March 2003 and again from January 1, 2008 to December 25, 2012.

Political Career

In 1982, Prem Kumar Dhumal was elected vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. When the Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (MLA) and state stalwart Jagdev Chand refused to run for the Hamirpur parliamentary constituency in 1984, he was chosen as the candidate.

Dhumal lost that election, but won it in 1989 and 1991. In 1996, he was defeated by Major General Bikram Singh. Prem Kumar Dhumal became involved in state politics after Jagdev Chand’s untimely demise in 1993.

From 1993 to 1998, he was the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Himachal Pradesh, and in March 1998, he was elected Chief Minister of the state after winning the Bamsan constituency of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly by a margin of 18,000 votes.

He led the BJP-Himachal Vikas Congress coalition government for the full five-year statutory term (1998–2003), and when the BJP lost power in 2003, he became Leader of the Opposition, garnering only 16 seats despite assistance from the NDA Union government.

During this time, considerable infrastructural projects, notably in the area of roads, occurred, earning Dhumal the title of Sadak walla Chief Minister.

After winning the Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency in a 2007 by-election, Dhumal resigned his position in the Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly. The by-election was called because Suresh Chandel, a BJP Member of Parliament, was expelled for his involvement in a cash-for-questions scandal. Dhumal’s Son Anurag Thakur, was elected as MP in a subsequent by-election in May 2008. Prem Kumar Dhumal was sworn in as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for the second time on December 30, 2007, after the BJP won the assembly elections that year. In the 2012 elections, the BJP was defeated.

Personal Life

He was the General Secretary of the college literary society and editor of the college magazine, and he wrote a great number of essays that were published in many prominent publications on political, cultural, sports, and other national problems from time to time.

In his spare time, he enjoys reading and listening to good music. He had also served as captain of the college volleyball team for three years in a row and had competed in the sport at the university level.

Family of Prem Kumar Dhumal

Prem Kumar Dhumal was born in Samirpur village, Hamirpur district, on April 10, 1944. Capt Mahant Ram was his father’s name, and Phulmu Devi was his mother’s.

On May 23, 1972, Dhumal married Sheela, with whom he had two sons, Arun Thakur and Anurag Thakur. He is also a politician, having served in the 14th and 15th Lok Sabhas and as Minister of Finance (India) under Independent Charge.

Education

He earned his M.A.(Eng) and LL.B. degrees after attending Doaba College in Jalandhar and Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, respectively. He got a job as a lecturer at a Punjabi private college.
