A major security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Punjab visit remains a major talking point. So, how do you expect the Punjab government to react? Well, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi seems to have chosen a way. He is laughing off the incident.
Punjab Chief Minister mocks PM Modi over security lapse in Punjab
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi spoke about the security lapse during PM Modi’s Punjab visit.
He said, “Where was the threat to his life? Nobody was within a kilometre of you. No stone was thrown, no bullet was fired, no slogans were raised. How can you say ‘I made it alive’! Such a sensitive statement from such a big leader. People voted you as Prime Minister – you should make responsible statements. You are saying we want to kill our Prime Minister.”

Channi quotes Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
In what seems like a veiled jibe, CM Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted a quote along with India’s first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s photo that read, “Someone who is concerned more about his life than his duty, should not take a big responsibility in a country like India.”
And the Punjab Chief Minister has also linked the entire controversy to the imposition of the President’s rule in Punjab. He said, “It is a deep conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabiyat. It is an attempt to vitiate the situation in the state. It is an attempt to impose President’s Rule in Punjab.”
But Channi is not the only one to make such remarks over PM Modi’s security lapse. Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu too said, “All that is being talked about for the past couple of days is security. And there are a few parrots who are mindlessly repeating security, security, security. And the foremost among those parrots are our former chief minister Amarinder Singh.”
It is over for Congress and CM Channi in the upcoming Punjab elections
The fact remains that no one is parroting the security issue. The entire nation will be naturally worried if there is a lapse in the security of the country’s Prime Minister.
The public opinion in Punjab has already been galvanising in BJP’s favour and according to ground reports, the BJP is becoming stronger in the North Indian state. Now, direct and indirect jibes at the Prime Minister over the security lapse only puts the INC in an even more precarious position.

The fact remains that the Prime Minister never said that he was concerned about his life. Nor did he place his life above his duty. And in any case, such quotes do not contradict the fact that the Union Home Ministry actually reported a security lapse during PM Modi’s Punjab visit. The Congress is, thus, out of the contest in Punjab polls and is staring at an impending doom in the eye.
