When a person is unwell he runs towards a doctor. The doctors are not just saving lives but mitigating our pain and suffering. Death is ultimate but the doctors can cheat that too. These are some sayings we often hear. But when it comes to respecting them people forget their pain and sufferings. Salute to doctors, people like to say but when they hear about a failure of a doctor they suddenly jump to malign the whole doctor’s community.
The media in the pre-pandemic era was very critical to doctors in India. Indian media was a step ahead in bringing out the corruption of doctors and nursing homes and staying silent on political corruption.
When the pandemic hit the world and finally it entered India, people started to feel the need for doctors and they started saying salute to doctors.

Why we should offer Salute to Doctors
Doctors were the first and most important frontline fighters in the struggle of the pandemic. We must honour doctors for all the good they accomplish within the constraints of the system, especially in nations like India where facilities and competent medical experts are rare.
Even today, doctors in government hospitals are labouring in dangerous conditions to treat poor and middle-class Covid-19 patients who cannot afford the outrageously high prices of therapy in private corporate hospitals, where treatment costs can exceed a million rupees.
A large number of medical staff, including senior doctors, have been infected with the virus while treating patients thus far. After recovering, the majority of them returned to service, demonstrating their dedication to their profession and employment during the pandemic.
According to a media report Dr Mehul Shah, an experienced intensivist or a critical care physician based in Mumbai who has been in the industry since 2003, had been working for more than 160 days in a row to treat the Covid patients during the first wave and did not go home for 40 days.
If the doctor and other frontline workers fight with the disease in the first place and in many cases they are vulnerable to diseases. They need respect and we salute doctors.
