‘You have strangulated the whole city,’ Supreme Court goes all out against farmers’ protest

Court, Protest, farmers

It has been almost a year since farmers’ protest has been creating disruption among the people. From Republic Day violence this year to the spread of covid, farmers protest has played a major role to create chaos in the nation. However, a farmer’s group, which tried to seek the Supreme Court’s permission for holding protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, has been bashed on Friday. The court asked the farmers what the point is in approaching the court if they have planned to continue the protests by blocking roads and highways.

‘You have strangulated the whole city’: Supreme Court

In an attempt to slam the farmers’ group for creating disruption, Justice A M Khanwilkar, who is heading a two-judge bench, said, “You have strangulated the city and now you want to come inside the city…You are obstructing security and defence personnel. This was in the media. All this should stop. There is no point in protest once you come to the court challenging the laws.”

Asking those agitating to have faith in the system, the court said, “What is the point of doing satyagraha. You have approached the court. Have trust in court. Once you have approached the court, what is the point of protest? Are you protesting against the judicial system? Have faith in the system.”

Earlier on Thursday, the top court had taken a note of the continuing blockade of highways connecting the national capital to the neighbouring states by farmers protesting against the farm laws. “Redressal can be through judicial form, agitation, or parliamentary debates. But how can highways be blocked and this happen perpetually? Where does it end?”, Justice S K Kaul had remarked.

Farmers Protest disrupting the nation

When thousands of alleged farmers gathered at Haryana’s Karnal and Panipat toll plazas — planning to advance towards Delhi to conduct a mass protest to mark the six-month anniversary of the unruly protests against the ‘revolutionary’ farm laws introduced by the central government, the Haryana government did nothing to stop the mobilisation and observed the entire chain of events like a mute spectator.

As reported by TFI, on May 16, violent clashes occurred between the police and the alleged farmers when Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited Hisar to inaugurate a Covid hospital.

In addition to that, despite repeated calls from the Union government to talk over the issues and call off the protest, the ‘fake farmers’ continued to protest even during the deadly second wave. This led to the spread of the virus in rural areas and the fatality rate increased especially in Punjab – the epicentre of protest.

The farmer’s protest has already caused the loss of thousands of crores to the exchequer and thus the government should step up and immediately stop the protest by force because these are not the kind of people who listen to appeals.
