West Bengal CID team that came to arrest a BJYM member in UP got beaten up

A four-member CID team from West Bengal reached Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district on Friday evening to arrest a Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader named Yogesh Varshney. However, the CID team, after not finding Yogesh started misbehaving with the family members of the leader. When Yogesh got to know about the incident, he called upon his party workers who quickly gathered around the house, locked the CID officers, and allegedly beat them up.  

Reportedly, the cops arrived at Gandhipark police station first. At around 7.30 pm, the team arrived at Yogesh’s house, accompanied by Gandhipark outpost in-charge Sandeep Kumar and a constable. However, the CID officers from Bengal, dressed in plain clothes entered the house while the local police officers stood outside the gate. It is being reported that the CID officers even misbehaved with the ladies in the house which led to an escalation in the situation. 

Aligarh Police stated after the incident by tweeting, “During the course of the investigation, the Bengal Police reached the Gandhipark area. The police team got in a rift with some local people – the local people accused the team of misbehavior. The situation was pacified by the officials immediately on the spot and no arrest was made by the West Bengal Police.” 

Khela kar denge  

Videos that have gone viral on social media platforms of the kerfuffle suggest that one of the members in the crowd shouted ‘Khela kardenge’ as a supposed sarcastic retort to Mamata’s infamous poll slogan of ‘Khela Hobe’. Using her politically charged slogan, the TMC goons, aided by the support of police officers had butchered several non-TMC voters in the post-poll violence, displacing several natives out of the state as refugees as well.

According to a Jagran report, BJYM District President Mukesh Lodhi remarked that the way Hindus were being tortured in West Bengal, boiled his blood. Had they tried to take Yogesh away, the police personnel would have known their real status. We will not allow anyone to even touch our worker and will report the matter to the CM. 

Varshney announcing a bounty on Mamata’s head 

The incident dates back to August 2017, when Hindu Jagran Manch workers, who were taking out a procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti were lathi-charged in West Bengal’s Birbhumi district. Infuriated by the unceremonious action of police and state machinery, youth BJP leader Yogesh Varshney, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in the city, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the lathi charge and issued a statement announcing a bounty of Rs 11 lakhs to the person who brought her head.  

“If they had any humanity, they wouldn’t have beaten up like this. If anyone brings me her severed head, I will give that person Rs 11 lakh,” Varshney said while criticising the police action on the rally. 

Yogesh’s statements quickly snowballed into a major controversy and the TMC leaders in Birbhumi registered a police complaint against him. The BJP at the time had also distanced itself from the controversy by disowning the leader.
