On Saturday, three men were arrested on the charge of ‘attempt to murder’ after a purported assassination attempt on Tripura’s Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. According to the police, on Thursday night, the accused tried to break into the security cordon of Tripura’s CM with their vehicle. The Chief Minister escaped unhurt; however, one of his security personnel sustained injuries. Shockingly this news was buried by the mainstream media.

According to a police officer, “The incident took place when the chief minister was crossing IGM Chowmuhani during his night walk on Thursday.” Within half an hour, the police arrested the accused. They were charged under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 279 (rash driving), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty) and 307 (attempt to murder). The accused men were identified as Subham Saha, 27, Gairik Ghosh, 24, and Aman Saha, 25. On Friday, they were produced before a local court. Police have seized their car and mobile sets and conducted raids at their respective houses.

West District superintendent of police Manik Das said, “They had ignored the signal of the security personnel on the outer cordon and hit one of our police personnel. However, their vehicle didn’t enter the security cordon and the CM had a narrow escape. We arrested them and have taken the matter up. We are investigating the issue to trace if there is any conspiracy behind the incident.”

Consulting editor at TFI, Ajit Datta questioned the silence of mainstream liberal media, he tweeted: “The mainstream media has been covering Bhaipo’s Tripura trip closely. But how many of you came across the news of attempted murder on the state’s CM Biplab Deb just yesterday? A sitting CM had a close shave, but I guess too much coverage would go against the idea of India Man shrugging.”

In another tweet, he said: “Truth to Power Channel has reported it with attempted murder in quotes in its headline. You can go through the report yourself in the next picture to determine whether it was attempted murder or “attempted murder”.

As the motive of the three men, all in their mid-20s is yet to be ascertained, Assistant Public Prosecutor Bidyut Sutradhar told PTI.

“We demanded two days of police remand for interrogation, but the court has remanded them to judicial custody till August 19. Now, the police would interrogate them in jail to know their motive behind driving through the security cordon of the chief minister,”

The mainstream media should be guilty of trying to deliberately spin off some of the earlier statements made by Chief Minister Biplab Deb. They have always found it convenient to turn a blind eye towards all the impressive work that Chief Minister Biplab Deb has carried out and the public support he enjoys in Tripura. It is evident that the liberal media is more interested in twisting the narrative by pinning the blame on BJP.

Earlier, the mainstream media got very busy covering Abhishek Banerjee’s Tripura trip very closely, be it his mere torn posters in the state, attack on his car, Prashant Kishore’s IPAC team’s detention in Tripura, every basic detail made it to the headlines. It is very unfortunate to witness the biases of the liberal news channels; they have particularly shared a common hatred for CM Biplab Deb, even though he is a popular leader in the Northeast.

It is very common for a CM from the Northeast to not get enough attention or coverage, had it been a CM from any other part of India, take for example Mamata Banerjee, there would have been a massive outcry and huge national coverage and headlines; moreover, Modi would have been blamed and called out a fascist, publicly. But this is what happens when the CM of a small northeastern state is attacked, just because he is not liked by the leftist media and its general apathy towards the northeast.

This biased nature of the liberal media curtails basic freedom of expression and the quest for truth. The attempt to assassinate CM Biplab Deb should be taken seriously and efforts by national media are needed to further push this investigation as it is a matter of national concern.
