Bakrid has turned out to be a Super Spreader, as Kerala becomes biggest exporter of Covid

Kerala Bakrid

Communist-ruled Kerala reported 22,129 Covid-19 cases after The Eid-ul-Adha celebrations in the state. First time since May, Kerala has reported more than twenty thousand cases in a single day which resulted in the highest single-day spike in Covid-19 in two months due to which The Supreme Court had slammed the Kerala government for allowing a three-day relaxation in Covid-19 restrictions on the occasion of the Bakrid.

With a sudden spike in case in Kerala, 53 per cent of the fresh infections in the country are now reported from the state and Bakrid has turned out to be a Super Spreader event contributing to the same. Although Kerala government’s negligence on Bakrid was a huge mistake but there seems to be silence in the national media regarding the same.

Kerala reported more than 15,000 cases on a daily basis day over the last two weeks, which is the second-highest in the country after Maharashtra. The Muslim-majority areas in North Kerala, has reported the maximum number of cases in the state. It was followed by Thrissur (2,623), Kozhikode (2,397), Ernakulam (2,352), Palakkad (2,115), Kollam (1,914), Kottayam (1,136), Thiruvananthapuram (1,100), Kannur (1,072), Alappuzha (1,064), Kasaragod (813), Wayanad (583), Pathanamthitta (523) and Idukki (400).

The IMA said that it is painful to witness the rise of cases and seropositivity, the Kerala Government had issued an order to ease out lockdown followed in the state for religious gatherings of Bakrid. “It is unwarranted and inappropriate at this time of Medical emergency. When many Northern states like J&K, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttaranchal have restricted the same with a constructive sense of public safety the traditional and popular pilgrimage Yatras, it is unfortunate to learn that the state of Kerala had taken these retrograde decisions,” The IMA said.

Despite the increase in cases in Kerala and the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government’s inability to manage the pandemic, they still caved in to the pressure of the Muslim community to lift the lockdown restrictions for three days to celebrate Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha.

Pinarayi on Saturday said that the curbs, including lockdowns were causing huge economic and social problems in the state and hence certain concessions were allowed after evaluating the course of the Covid-19 infection daily. This issue has sparked fierce debate online and drawn comparisons to the cancellation of the Kanwar Yatra by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand government.

Earlier TFI has extensively reported how the Kerala model would contribute to the third wave of covid 19. Kerala’s model of healthcare has failed spectacularly in the state along with Maharashtra as the cases continue to surge. The first and second waves started from these two states and later engulfed the entire country.
