Congress scion Rahul Gandhi and the ambiguity towards his citizenship has time and again garnered the spotlight. This time around a Twitter user has built upon BJP leader and lawyer Subramaniam Swamy’s expose of three years ago. In September 2017, Swamy had written a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to disqualify Rahul Gandhi as an MP for violating article 9 and 18 of the Constitution of India.
The BJP leader in his letter had stated that as per the Registrar of Companies, England and Wales, Rahul Gandhi, who is a multiple-time MP, was the Director and Secretary of United Kingdom-based company BACKOPS Limited. As reported by TFI, in 2003, Rahul Gandhi floated a company by the name of Backops Services Private Limited, based out of New Delhi.
The Congress party prince owned a share of 83 per cent in the company. A few months following this, Rahul had expanded overseas, by incorporating a company in the UK in the name and style of Backops Limited. The root cause of a majority of Rahul Gandhi’s current problems is this very company, which currently stands dissolved.
However, a Twitter user pointed that while the company was dissolved in 2009, the data from the government website pertaining to Rahul Gandhi has now been suspiciously removed. Thus, raising the question if Rahul Gandhi was still looking to cover his tracks.

It is imperative to note that Rahul Gandhi did not seek necessary permissions for setting up an offshore business entity like Backops. He did not avail permissions even during the UPA rule, as that would officially register the sources of funding, a parameter Rahul did not want to be made public.
Moreover, according to documents accessed by India Today in 2019, Ulrik Mcknight, the co-promoter of Backops Limited, along with Rahul Gandhi had acquired defence offsets during the UPA regime.
After the firm UK firm wound up its operations in 2009, Mcknight went on to acquire offset contracts from French defence manufacturing company Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS) against Scorpene submarines in 2011.
The fact that Rahul’s former business partner benefitted through the European subsidiaries of an Indian offset partner, which got the contract during the UPA era further raises doubts on the Congress’s already diluted credibility.
Subramanian Swamy has spearheaded the fight against the Gandhi family’s scandalous deals. Not only has he played a crucial role in getting many family loyalists behind bars for their corruption deals, but he has also ensured Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have a run for their life before eventually ending up in jail for their misdeeds.
However, the BJP government has been lackadaisical in taking the case to its fruition. Years have passed and nothing has been done by the government apart from the issuance of a couple of notices. Rahul Gandhi continues to evade the authorities regarding the reality of his citizenship – even managing to contest elections from two seats in the Lok Sabha polls.
