Mamata Banerjee could land in trouble, as Election Commission is not satisfied with the initial report regarding her injuries

A stray case of an accident, or a well-planned and sophisticated plot to somehow give rise to a sympathy wave in favour of TMC and its supremo? The Election Commission seems to be determined to find out. The EC is taking much interest in the case of Mamata Banerjee’s injury and what caused it. While the Bengal chief minister did not waste a single wakeful moment on Wednesday evening and took to alleging that she was attacked by 4-5 men with obvious political inclinations – within 24 hours, Mamata Banerjee changed her testimony.

The Election Commission had sought a detailed report from West Bengal chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay, special observer Ajay Nayak and special police observer Vivek Dubey by Friday evening. The Bengal government’s report, however, was found to be inadequate and ‘sketchy’ by the commission. A senior official said, “The report from West Bengal, which the Commission has got, appeared quite sketchy and without any details of the incident like how it happened or who could be behind it. We have asked the state administration to furnish more details.”

In the report, the state government referred to the presence of a huge crowd at the spot but did not mention the “4-5 people”, who Banerjee alleged had attacked her, officials were quoted saying by the Tribune. As such, the EC seems too interested to know why there has been no mention of the group of men who ‘attacked’ Mamata Banerjee. If that was not the case, the EC would also like to know why the chief minister herself, and her coterie, went all over town claiming the same.

On Saturday, the West Bengal chief secretary submitted another report to the EC. Deliberations on the same are slated to take place today. According to the Hindustan Times, the second report, prepared by the police and sent to the ECI by the state’s chief secretary also has details regarding Banerjee’s itinerary on that day, the places which she visited and the number of security personnel deployed for Mamata Banerjee’s security.

The commission is all set to get to the bottom of the entire incident. In doing so, it might just uncover a massive conspiracy of the desperate ruling party to garner political brownie points by flashing images of wheelchair-bound Mamata Banerjee. While it might be hoping to earn the sympathy of the people from Bengal by doing so, its fate now hangs in the balance. The EC will now decide on the veracity of TMC’s claims, which for any sane individual, have been an unverified, baseless and fallacious load of bunkum from the first day.
