A Muslim girl dared to marry a Hindu man. The man’s family and his entire ‘basti’ had to pay the price

Just a few days after the dastardly murder of Rinku Sharma, Delhi has been rocked with yet another violent incident as in South Delhi’s Harijan Basti, a mob attacked the Basti due to a Hindu resident marrying a Muslim girl with her consent.

On Sunday, South-East Delhi’s Harijan Basti in Sarai Kale Khan saw a violent mob attack the house of a 22-year-old man for marrying a woman who belonged to the Muslim community in an interfaith marriage. Apparently, the mob was irked by the fact that the 22-year-old man belonged to the Hindu community.

In the CCTV footage of the incident which has been widely circulated in social media, a mob of 15-20 men can be seen creating a ruckus in the locality as they can be seen breaking pots, pelting stones, damaging vehicles and banging on the doors in an attempt to break it. According to a report by the Hindu, three to four people were injured during the violence.

According to the Police, the woman’s family was against the couple’s relationship. “The spot was visited by senior officers and it was revealed that Sumit and Khushi, both adults, of the same locality got married against the will of the woman’s parents. The mob comprised woman’s relatives and acquaintances,” said DCP (South-East) R.P. Meena.

While four people have been arrested in connection with the violence, local residents still feel unsafe as according to them the accused men are still “roaming free”. Even the Hindu man named Sumit’s family is now living in a constant state of fear after being threatened of dire consequences.

“My son married a Muslim girl. They [woman’s family] were against it. They abused us and said they will not allow us to stay here. We were called to the police station on Saturday. Khushi had even said she was happy with the marriage but after we returned from the police station, they created ruckus here. We are all scared,” said Sumit’s mother Rajni.

Earlier in February, a 25-year-old Hindu man named Rinku Sharma was initially assaulted and later stabbed to death by a Muslim mob that had barged into his house in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri. The family of Rinku Sharma alleged that Rinku’s death was a hate crime as they claimed that he was being harassed by the mob for being a vocal supporter of the BJP and PM Modi.

Even the recent incident not only speaks of the fear in the family of the Hindu boy but also of how criminals roam free in Delhi. The Delhi Police must investigate the claims of the victim’s family and book the perpetrators of this ghastly crime.
