Mahua Moitra’s unsavoury remarks about ex-CJI Ranjan Gogoi has landed her in big trouble

Mahua Moitra, Ranjan Gogoi

Mahua Moitra, the foulmouth MP of TMC, might get into serious trouble as the government is mulling a breach of privilege motion against her for her comments on former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi. She made reference to sexual harassment allegations against ex-CJI Gogoi, although the allegations weren’t found to be true.

“India’s tragedy today is not that her government has failed her, but that her other democratic pillars, the media and the judiciary have failed her. The sacred cow that was the judiciary is no longer sacred,” Mahua claimed.

“It stopped being sacred the day a sitting chief justice of this country was accused of sexual harassment, presided over his own trial, cleared himself and then proceeded to accept a nomination to the Upper House in three months of retirement complete with Z-plus security cover…The judiciary stopped being sacred when it squandered the opportunity to guard the founding principles of the Constitution,” she alleged

Now the government is set to bring a privilege motion against Mahua for her comments against ex-CJI Gogoi, because, as per Article 121 of the constitution, no comments can be made on judges in parliament unless the removal of the judge is being discussed.

Moreover, Rule 352 (5) of rules of procedure and conduct of business in Lok Sabha can also be invoked against TMC MP Mahua, which states, “This can reflect upon the conduct of persons and authorities unless the discussion is based on a substantive motion drawn in proper terms”.

Mahua Moitra is known for making unparliamentary statements in Lok Sabha in a sophisticated accent. The left-liberal intellectual establishments and media give her a free pass every time. Her speeches normally have no content and most of the times, are filled with the typical liberal rants like fascism, dictatorship, authoritarianism, and so on. The last time when she gave a fiery speech in Lok Sabha, it was much celebrated by the left-liberal establishment but was her speech was found to be plagiarised.

An article by Martin Longman published in Washington Monthly on January 31, 2017. Longman wrote the article to criticise US President Donald Trump and argued that his administration shows ‘early signs of fascism’ which are listed in the US Holocaust Museum and Mahua Moitra picked content from the speech and superimposed it on the Modi government.

The ‘oriental’ teachings of the left-liberal establishment have kept away from the popular narrative of the country for long. The establishment’s takeover of the Congress party destroyed the career of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and reduced them to double-digit seats in the last two general elections. Seeing everything from a western perspective or juxtaposing the American political system with that of India’s does not work. MPs like Mahua Moitra needs to be taught the same.

The comparison between any racist, xenophobic, sexist American politician and PM Modi is foolishness only left-liberals could afford. The ideological positions of Trump and Modi are completely different on topics like environmental change, economy, trade, and social issues. If the left-liberals do not wish to be marginalised further, they need to pick better icons than Mahua Moitra. If they wish to remain relevant in the intellectual and political discourse of the country, they needed to Indianise themselves.

With a breach of privilege motion against her, Mahua Moitra is set to get into deep trouble for exercising absolute Freedom of Speech.
