A few weeks ago, on December 12, TFIPost analysed that the farmers’ protests have a very clear political goal in mind- to break the BJP-JJP alliance in Haryana. From the latest political halchal, it seems the protestors are succeeding in that. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and INLD Chief Dushyant Chautala are set to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah today to discuss the issues.
Previously the protestors vandalised the venue of the Chief Minister’s ‘Kisan panchayat’, where he was expected to meet the farmers and explain the benefits of the farm bills to them. On the vandalisation, the CM said that the incident gave a message. “Today’s incident gave a message to people, bigger than what I’d intended to give. These people have defamed the farmers because a farmer doesn’t have such nature. A farmer can be less educated or simple but he’s sensible,” he said in a press conference after the incident.

“It is not right to obstruct anyone who wants to speak. I don’t think people will tolerate violation of provisions given by Dr BR Ambedkar. Congress had attempted to finish democracy in 1975. At that time people identified their disgusting work & threw them out of power,” he added.
The BJP government in Haryana is dependent on the support of JJP MLAs. The Dushyant Chautala led party won 10 seats of the Haryana legislative assembly out of 90. BJP, which could win only 40 seats against 46 needed to form a government, allied with JJP to come to power and Dushyant Chautala was appointed as Deputy CM of the state.
But now many MLAs of the JJP are voicing their decision against the party and insisting on resignation from the government over the farm bills. Chautala has summoned all the MLAs and a few other party leaders to Delhi for the discussion over the issues.
Chautala, who is under pressure to break alliance with BJP over the farmers’ issue, had maintained silence for a few days. However, as the internal differences in the party grew over the farm bill, Chautala made a statement and said that he will quit the government if MSP is not ensured for farmers.
“Our party’s National President already made it clear that MSP must be ensured to farmers. The written proposals given by the Central government to the protesting farmers include a provision for MSPs. I will work to secure MSP for farmers as long as I am in power. I will resign from my post the day I am unable to fulfil the promise,” Chautala told ANI a few weeks ago.
It is very much evident that the farmers’ protests are more about politics than policy because the organisation had previously supported the liberalisation of the agriculture sector. The only aim of BKU is to ensure that Congress comes to power in Haryana and remains in power in Punjab, and therefore, they are blaming the Modi government for everything instead of protesting against the state government policies.
The only aim of the BKU-led ongoing farmers’ protests is to resurrect the moribund Congress party and maximise damage to BJP. It wants to destabilise the BJP-led government in Haryana and to some extent succeeding in that.
