Somnath Bharti, the AAP MLA from Malviya Nagar, New Delhi and a former Supreme Court lawyer, is known for controversies and crimes. From spamming to domestic violence, assault of workers to harassing women, Bharti has been convicted in some of the most heinous and atrocious crimes. However, for most of the crimes, he used to find some escape given his law practice.
But, a few weeks ago, Bharti set foot in the Yogi Adityanath-governed Uttar Pradesh and his bad days started since then. The AAP MLA made many controversial statements in Uttar Pradesh and was arrested by UP Police for promoting enmity between groups. “Children are being born in hospitals, but they are of dogs,” was one of Bharti’s provocative statements in Uttar Pradesh.
After spending a few days in jail, a metropolitan court in Delhi directed UP Police to produce him in the assault case of security staff at AIIMS, New Delhi, 2016. “The production warrant be sent and served by DCP concerned to the Jail Superintendent concerned where accused is currently running in the custody through Special Messenger considering the fact that next date of hearing is January 18, 2.15 pm and matter is at the stage of consideration / judgement. Jail Superintendent concerned is directed to produce the accused Somnath Bharti without any fail on next date of hearing,” the Court said.
Now the Metropolitan Court in Delhi has convicted Bharti in the assault of a security official at AIIMS. “The prosecution has duly proved that the mob which was gathered on September 9, 2016, at around 9.45 am at the drain (nallah) behind AIIMS New Delhi was gathered there for demolishing the wall and fence possessed by the AIIMS,” said Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey.
So, the AAP leader would probably be shifted to a Delhi jail from Sultanpur jail in Uttar Pradesh, after he completes the jail term in the state. Bharti was recently in UP to promote Delhi’s school and health model in Uttar Pradesh to set the ‘mahaul’ for the Aam Aadmi Party before the 2022 assembly election of Uttar Pradesh. However, all he did was abusing Yogi Adityanath and his administration and made statements like, ‘children born in hospitals are of dogs.’
The UP Police has booked Bharti under section 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the Indian Penal Code. Once he comes out of UP jail, the Delhi Police will throw him in the jail once again for the assault of a security official at AIIMS. It seems that Karma is catching up Bharti given the fact that he has committed heinous crimes ranging from spamming to domestic violence.
