The principal Opposition Party in the United Kingdom – the Labour Party’s hatred for India is well known as from supporting Pakistan on Kashmir to supporting the Sikh Referendum; the Labour Party MPs have done it all. As the farmers’ protests continue to rage in India, the Labour Party is attempting to force the ruling Conservatives to pressurise India against enacting these laws. However, both UK PM Boris Johnson and the UK electorate have royally ignored them which perhaps have infuriated the Labour MPs.
Taiwo Owatemi, a Labour MP, openly promoted secessionist groups in India as she advocated for “the Sikh community’s right to self-determination.” As if realising her folly, Owatemi later not only deleted her tweet but also apologised to her constituents.
In their zeal to act as the international moral police, Labour Party MPs have made it their agenda to periodically rant against India and subsequently suffer a meltdown when their hollow rants are ignored; a Labour Party MP has seemingly crossed a line by openly advocating for secessionist groups in India.
In the now deleted tweet, Owatemi said, “I stand with #SikhsForJustice and the Sikh community’s right to self-determination on #UNDayofHumanRights. This is the clearest way that the conflict between Sikhs and the Indian authorities can be resolved.”
The Coventry North West MP perhaps realised her folly that despite being a UK MP she was openly supporting a secessionist movement in a country which shares warm relations with the United Kingdom. Behaving like a true coward, she blamed the tweet on a staff member.
Owatemi in her apology tweet, said, “A small number of individuals emailed me to post a suggested tweet supporting Sikhs for Justice. Unbeknown to me a staff member who helps to run my social media posted the tweet. This has now been deleted. I sincerely apologise for any offence caused to any of my constituents.”

Recently, 36 UK MPs mostly Labour, fired off a letter to the UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab over India’s new farm laws. In the letter they have stated, that the new laws will act as a “death warrant” for “India’s bread basket” as they pushed the Boris Johnson administration to pressurise India against enacting these laws.

This elite group of MPs includes Labour MP Debbie Abrahams, whose constituency is dominated by British-Pakistanis and regularly does Pakistan’s bidding in the UK. Reportedly, she received a “benefit in kind” of 31,000 Euros for berating India.
Another signatory of the letter is Labour MP Tamanjeet Singh Dhesi, who raked up the issue of farm laws in the UK parliament only for Boris Johnson to royally shut him down. Dhesi is also a strong proponent of Khalistan as in a 2018 rally as he went on an unbridled rant against India. The rally was for 2020 referendum rally which was organised by Sikhs for Justice – pro-Khalistan movement. Unfortunately for Dhesi, 2020 has almost passed and his dreams of Khalistan will only continue to exist only his figments of imagination.
The American constituency where the prosperous Indo-Americans are attracting the attention of both the Democrats and Republicans for their donations is not a politically significant constituency which can flip the election. However, in the UK, if one wants to win the Parliamentary election, one cannot do it without the support of British-Indians – a fact realised by the Conservatives who have spared no stone unturned to win the support of the Indian community.
On the other hand, the Labour Party is clearly oblivious to this fact and as clockwork berates India daily, they have been warming the Opposition benches for the foreseeable future even at a time when the Conservatives were in a turmoil as they switched from David Cameron to Theresa May and finally, to Boris Johnson.
